Indian Mixed Disability Cricket Team Recreates Iconic Ganguly Celebration at Lord’s

London, UK – The hallowed grounds of Lord’s Cricket Ground once again bore witness to a historic moment, not just for its sporting spectacle, but for a powerful echo of the past. Twenty-two years after Sourav Ganguly’s iconic shirt-waving celebration following India’s NatWest Trophy victory, the Indian Mixed Disability cricket team triumphantly replicated the gesture after a resounding 118-run T20 win against England on August 19th.

The dramatic recreation of the famous 2002 moment, where Ganguly famously peeled off his shirt in jubilation from the Lord’s balcony, saw the Indian players emulate their hero. Following their dominant victory, members of the Indian squad removed their shirts and waved them enthusiastically in the air, a symbolic nod to one of Indian cricket’s most memorable celebrations.

This vibrant display of joy followed India’s commanding performance at the Festival of Disability Cricket. Batting first, India posted a formidable total of 206 for four, their highest score of the seven-match series. Notable contributions came from batsmen like Arjun Gaware, Major Magray, and Sai Akash, who propelled the Indian innings. Despite Alfie Pyle’s two wickets, England’s bowlers struggled to contain the flow of runs.

In response, England’s chase faltered dramatically, as they were bowled out for a mere 88 runs, securing India’s impressive 118-run victory. However, this convincing win came after England had already clinched the series 4-3, making India’s triumph a significant consolation and a powerful statement.

England captain Callum Flynn expressed his disappointment at the loss, particularly given their strong series performance. "It’s such a disappointing end for us, we’ve fought so hard this series and done so much right and I felt it was all leading to a sign-off win here, but it wasn’t to be," Flynn remarked.

Despite securing the series, England’s elusive quest for a win at Lord’s against India continues. Flynn, while acknowledging the defeat, remained optimistic about future opportunities. "Hopefully in a year’s time we’ll get a chance to get our first win at Lord’s. As cricketers with disabilities, some of us might have imagined we’d never get the chance to play here – the next step now is getting a win here," he stated, highlighting the inspiring journey of disability cricketers.

The Indian team’s recreation of the Ganguly celebration not only served as a tribute to a sporting legend but also underscored the growing prominence and spirit of disability cricket. It was a moment that transcended the boundaries of the sport, echoing a timeless act of triumph and national pride on one of cricket’s most revered stages. The iconic celebration will undoubtedly be remembered as a highlight in the history of disability cricket.
