Joe Root Ties Sachin Tendulkar’s Legendary Record for Most Test Fifties

In another historic chapter of his illustrious career, England’s premier batter Joe Root has reached a monumental milestone, equaling the legendary Sachin Tendulkar for the most half-centuries in the history of Test cricket.

During the ongoing first Test against Pakistan at Headingley, Root produced a typically composed knock to reach his 68th Test fifty. The milestone arrived on a significant day for the Yorkshireman, who recently returned to the England Test captaincy following the retirement of Ben Stokes.

A Career of Unrivaled Consistency

Root’s latest half-century, a disciplined 66 off 112 balls featuring 10 boundaries, solidified his status as one of the modern era’s greatest run-scorers. With this feat, he draws level with the "Little Master," Sachin Tendulkar, at the summit of the all-time list.

The achievement highlights the remarkable longevity and consistency of the English batter, who now looks poised to stand alone at the top of the record books in his next outing. The current standing for the most 50-plus scores in the format features some of the game’s greatest icons:

  • *68 – Joe Root**
  • 68 – Sachin Tendulkar
  • 66 – Shivnarine Chanderpaul
  • 63 – Allan Border
  • 63 – Rahul Dravid
  • 62 – Ricky Ponting

Furthermore, Root’s ability to lead by example is evidenced by his climb into the top five list for most 50-plus scores as a Test captain. He now sits with 42 such scores, trailing only Graeme Smith (61), Ricky Ponting (54), Allan Border (51), and Misbah-ul-Haq (43).

England Dominates at Headingley

The match itself has been a showcase of English dominance. After winning the toss and electing to field, the England pace battery decimated the Pakistani lineup, bowling them out for a modest 171. Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue were the chief destroyers, sharing the wickets equally with figures of 5/51 and 5/46, respectively.

While Abdullah Shafique attempted to anchor the Pakistani innings with a defiant 61, the visitors struggled to combat the persistent pressure applied by England’s seamers.

In response, England took control of the contest through a commanding partnership between Jordan Cox and Root. Cox played an aggressive role, contributing 73 runs before falling to Ali Usman. Root’s own stay at the crease ended shortly thereafter when Khurram Shahzad struck with a sharp inswinger, trapping the batter LBW.

Although the dismissal meant England exhausted their remaining reviews, the damage had been done. Root’s performance has put his side in a commanding position, cementing his legacy as he continues to chase down the game’s greatest Test cricket records.
