Tottenham Mourns the Passing of Legendary Double-Winner Terry Dyson at 91

Tottenham Hotspur is in mourning following the death of Terry Dyson, a celebrated winger who served as a cornerstone of the club’s most iconic era. Dyson, who passed away at the age of 91, leaves behind an indelible legacy as a vital component of the team that captured the 1960-61 "Double" and remains the only Spurs player in history to score a hat-trick against arch-rivals Arsenal.

During his decade-long tenure at White Hart Lane, Dyson made 209 appearances and netted 55 goals, earning a reputation for delivering when the stakes were highest.

Architect of the Historic Double

Dyson was a pivotal figure in the squad managed by the legendary Bill Nicholson. In the 1960-61 season, Spurs etched their names into the history books by becoming the first English club in the 20th century to complete the league and FA Cup double. Dyson’s contribution was essential; he famously scored in the 2-0 FA Cup Final victory over Leicester City at Wembley, cementing his status as a club icon.

His impact extended beyond domestic borders, as he played a central role in Tottenham’s rise to European prominence. Two years after their domestic success, Spurs made history as the first British club to secure a major European trophy by winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

Defining Moments in Rotterdam

The pinnacle of Dyson’s European career arrived in 1963 in Rotterdam, where he produced a stunning display in the Cup Winners’ Cup final against Atlético Madrid. Dyson scored twice in a 5-1 thrashing, a performance that remains etched in the memories of the club’s faithful.

Paying tribute to his former colleague, teammate Cliff Jones, also 91, shared a poignant message on social media: “Sad to hear of the passing of my friend and teammate Terry Dyson. Scored so many trophy-winning goals. Condolences to all the family. Remember Rotterdam.”

A Unique Record in North London

Perhaps the most enduring element of Dyson’s legacy is his singular achievement against Arsenal. At the start of the 1961-62 season, he achieved a feat no other Tottenham player has managed since: scoring a hat-trick in a North London derby.

Dyson himself later recalled the occasion with characteristic honesty, admitting a touch of fortune on one of his goals: “One of them hit my hand. It bounced up, hit my hand and I lashed it in and the Arsenal players went mad.” Despite the controversy, the Arsenal hat-trick stands as a record that defines his legendary status in the rivalry.

A Fond Farewell

Former Spurs midfielder Micky Hazard hailed Dyson as "a true gentleman" and "one of the best," emphasizing the rarity of his achievements.

In an official statement, Tottenham Hotspur expressed their profound sadness: “The club is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of our former player, Terry Dyson. Terry was a key part of our double-winning side in 1961… Our deepest condolences are with Terry’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”

Following his storied spell at Spurs, Dyson continued his career with stints at Fulham, Colchester, and Guildford, but it is his transformative impact at Tottenham that ensures his name will be remembered for generations to come.
