Community in Mourning After 14-Year-Old Boy Killed in Portsmouth Bus Collision

Tributes have been paid to a 14-year-old schoolboy who tragically lost his life after a collision with a bus in Portsmouth earlier this week.

The incident occurred on The Hard, a busy transport hub near Portsmouth Harbour, at approximately 4:25 p.m. on Monday, August 17. Emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of a serious collision involving a pedestrian and a single-decker bus.

The teenager was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but has since sadly passed away. Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that they are supporting the boy’s family with specialist officers during this devastating time.

Investigation and Arrest

Authorities have launched an appeal for witnesses and information as they seek to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

A 39-year-old man from Portsmouth, who was driving the bus at the time, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has since been released on police bail until November 17 while investigations continue.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Stagecoach confirmed their involvement in the incident. "We can confirm that one of our bus drivers was involved in a collision with a pedestrian in Portsmouth yesterday, which resulted in the pedestrian sustaining injuries," the spokesperson said. "We are cooperating fully with Hampshire Constabulary and the local authorities, who are leading the investigation."

Calls for Safety Improvements

As news of the fatality broke, local concerns have intensified regarding the design of the site. A petition has been launched urging Portsmouth Council to overhaul safety measures at the bus stop, with claims that the boy was struck by a lamppost dislodged when the bus mounted the kerb.

The petition highlights "inadequate design and space constraints" at the location, describing the pavement as "dangerously narrow" and incapable of safely accommodating pedestrians. It further alleges that the layout leads to motorists performing hazardous maneuvers to navigate around stationary buses.

An Outpouring of Grief

The local community has been left heartbroken, with many gathering at the scene to leave flowers and handwritten notes.

One poignant tribute left by a friend read: "RIP Fly High. I will never forget our memories. We had such a good time in science. Can’t believe what happened. We will all miss u lots. Forever 14."

A family friend shared their sorrow on social media, writing: "Such a great young man with so much to live for. A true credit to his family. Rest in eternal peace. Sending love to your whole family."

As the city grapples with the aftermath of this fatal crash, officials are facing mounting pressure to address the infrastructure issues that residents argue contributed to the tragedy. Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who possesses relevant dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward immediately.
