Bangladesh Warns of Australian Backlash Ahead of Second Test in Mackay

MACKAY – Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has issued a stern warning to his side, cautioning that a "wounded" Australia is likely to respond with increased intensity in the second Test, beginning this Saturday in Mackay.

The warning comes on the heels of a historic nine-wicket triumph for Bangladesh in the series opener in Darwin. The result marked the first time the Tigers have ever defeated Australia on their home soil, a shock loss that local media outlets have dubbed the "Darwin Disaster."

Despite the historic nature of the win, Simmons remains focused on the challenges ahead. Addressing his squad, the coach emphasized that resting on their laurels is not an option when facing the current World Test Championship leaders.

"The only thing I had to say to them—and I will repeat it anyway—is that Australia is going to come harder," Simmons said during a pre-match press conference. "We have to either keep that level of performance or get a little bit better. Even if we have to get 1% better in some areas, we have to make sure that’s there. We know they are going to change their game."

Simmons admitted that the Darwin victory stands as one of the most satisfying moments of his coaching career. However, he remains pragmatic regarding team selection. While left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam—who boasts 27 wickets in 13 Tests—is back in contention after recovering from a hamstring injury, Simmons is hesitant to break up a winning formula.

"He offers something different," Simmons noted. "But again, we just won a Test match. I’m one who hardly likes to change winning teams. It’s a possibility, but I can’t say for sure."

For the hosts, Australian captain Pat Cummins is focused on immediate improvement. Australia has confirmed one change to their lineup, with Matt Renshaw replacing Jake Weatherald at the top of the order. Cummins had also weighed the tactical option of fielding four pacers by introducing Scott Boland at the expense of veteran spinner Nathan Lyon, though the final composition was confirmed following a last-minute training assessment.

Cummins dismissed the idea that the team is in a crisis, framing the Darwin loss as an underperformance rather than a systemic failure.

"I think if we play really well and we lose, you feel like you need to do some soul-searching," Cummins told reporters. "I certainly felt like we didn’t play anywhere near our best, and they played really well and deserved to win. I think everyone is in pretty good nick; it’s just about translating our form into an actual good result."

As the teams prepare for the second clash, the cricket world remains fixated on whether Bangladesh can sustain their momentum or if the wounded Australia side will regain their dominance in the series finale.
