Call of Duty Returns to Nintendo: First Gameplay Revealed for Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2

The wait for the return of a gaming titan to Nintendo hardware is finally coming to an end. After more than a decade of absence, the Call of Duty franchise is making a massive comeback with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Following years of speculation, we now have our first look at the title in action, marking a significant milestone for Nintendo’s next-generation console.

The significance of this release cannot be overstated. Since the launch of Call of Duty: Ghosts on the Wii U back in 2013, the franchise has skipped every major Nintendo platform, leaving a glaring hole in the console’s library. By securing one of the world’s most lucrative gaming franchises for the Switch 2, Nintendo is signaling a new era of third-party support and parity with its competitors.

Performance and Visuals

The community got its first glimpse of the game this week, with 15 minutes of docked gameplay footage surfacing online. The performance appears to be a major selling point: initial reports suggest the game maintains a steady 60 frames per second. While some minor frame dips are present during high-intensity sequences, the performance is remarkably stable for a demanding modern shooter running on hardware of this class.

You can view the first gameplay for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 below:

A Global Conflict

Modern Warfare 4 promises a narrative that explores "darker and more dangerous territory." The premise centers on a catastrophic invasion of the Korean Peninsula by North Korea, which threatens global stability.

The campaign will take players across a diverse set of international locales. The narrative follows a squad of South Korean soldiers fighting for survival on the front lines, juxtaposed against a rogue mission led by a vengeful Captain Price. Players can expect a globe-trotting experience, ranging from brutal trench warfare in Korea and close-quarters combat in New York to high-speed chases in Paris and clandestine SAS night raids in Mumbai.

Multiplayer and DMZ

Beyond the cinematic campaign, the title promises to deliver the tight, grounded multiplayer experience the series is known for, emphasizing fluid movement and granular player control. Fans of the extraction-shooter genre will also be pleased to see the return of the DMZ mode, which tasks players with operating as "off-the-books" assets behind enemy lines. Success in DMZ will once again hinge on high-stakes decision-making: knowing when to secure an objective and when to extract before it’s too late.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026. For those eager to test the game for themselves, an open beta for the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to kick off next week.
