Embark Studios to Halt ARC Raiders Expeditions Until 2027 Following Community Backlash
Embark Studios has officially announced that the fifth iteration of its "Expeditions" system for the extraction shooter ARC Raiders will be the last of its kind for the foreseeable future. The developer plans to put the feature on hiatus until early 2027, opting for a complete overhaul to address widespread dissatisfaction among the player base.
A Controversial Mechanic
Expeditions serve as a high-stakes progression reset, allowing players to voluntarily wipe their character data, stash, and levels in exchange for a mix of temporary and permanent rewards. While such mechanics are intended to provide long-term goals for dedicated players, the implementation in ARC Raiders has struggled to gain traction since its debut.
The community has frequently voiced concerns regarding the system’s value proposition, with many players questioning whether the rewards provided truly justify the loss of hard-earned progress. Furthermore, criticism has been leveled at the restrictive departure windows and the significant barriers to entry, which many newcomers find inaccessible.
The Path Forward
In a recent official blog post, Embark Studios acknowledged that the current iteration of Expeditions has failed to meet expectations, stating that "bigger changes" are required to integrate the feature into the game effectively.
The fifth Expedition window is scheduled to open on September 8 and will remain active through September 29. Once this period concludes, the developer will suspend the system to focus on a complete redesign. While a firm return date has not been set, the studio confirmed that the revamped system is not expected to arrive before early 2027.
Balancing Engagement
The decision to remove a primary progression reset mechanism leaves an open question regarding how Embark intends to keep the game’s core player base engaged. In the extraction shooter genre, periodic wipes often act as a critical "reset button" that keeps the gameplay loop fresh and competitive.
Without this cycle, the studio faces the challenge of preventing late-game stagnation and ensuring that hardcore players continue to have meaningful objectives. For the time being, the weight of player retention will rest on the upcoming Frozen Trail update, which arrives on October 8. Whether Frozen Trail can sustain the community’s interest while the developers work behind the scenes to rectify their most contentious system remains to be seen.
As Embark Studios prepares to pivot, the player community is already weighing in on the necessary changes, with many looking toward the future of ARC Raiders with cautious optimism.
