Indian Railways to Elevate Travel Experience with Amrit Bharat 3.0: AC Coaches on the Horizon
Indian Railways is set to revolutionize affordable long-distance travel by introducing air-conditioned coaches to its Amrit Bharat Express fleet. This upcoming iteration, dubbed "Amrit Bharat 3.0," is expected to roll out within the current financial year, marking a significant transition for a service that has historically functioned as a non-AC, long-distance option for the common man.
A Modern Upgrade for the Masses
Launched in 2023, the Amrit Bharat Express was designed to offer premium-style amenities at an accessible price point, with sleeper class fares averaging approximately ₹500 per 1,000 kilometers. The response from the public has been overwhelming; with over 60 trains currently in operation, occupancy rates in the sleeper class frequently exceed 100%, highlighting a clear demand for reliable, modern, and affordable rail connectivity.
The trains distinguish themselves through "push-pull" technology, utilizing locomotives at both ends to achieve faster acceleration and deceleration. This configuration allows for maximum speeds of up to 130 km/h, significantly reducing transit times for passengers—particularly migrants, workers, and seasonal travelers.
Features of the Amrit Bharat 3.0
The new AC-equipped rakes are expected to blend the affordability of the original service with the comfort of more premium trains. According to sources, these coaches will incorporate features from both the Vande Bharat sleeper and Rajdhani Express models. The rollout plans include the inclusion of all three primary AC tiers: AC 1st, AC 2-tier, and AC 3-tier, with an initial order of 14 rakes already placed.
Current Amrit Bharat trains are already packed with modern features, including:
- Enhanced Comfort: Ergonomic seats and berths, foldable snack tables, and bottle holders.
- Smart Amenities: USB Type-A and Type-C charging ports, mobile holders, and a Public Address & Passenger Information System (PAPIS).
- Advanced Sanitation: Modular toilets with automated odour control, vacuum flushing systems, and automatic soap dispensers.
- Safety & Stability: Crashworthy design, semi-automatic couplers for jerk-free travel, and air spring suspension for a smoother ride.
The Path Toward "Aspirational" Rail Travel
Industry experts view the move toward AC coaches as a vital step in India’s modernization. Sudhanshu Mani, the former General Manager of ICF and a key architect of the Vande Bharat project, suggests that an "aspirational India" should progressively prioritize air-conditioned travel for all.
"An aspirational India should progressively look at replacing most trains with air-conditioned ones," Mani noted, emphasizing that while the Amrit Bharat provides excellent improvements over traditional trains, the long-term goal should be to make air-conditioned journeys a standard amenity rather than a luxury.
However, the transition is not without its challenges. G. Raghuram, Advisor at The Infravision Foundation, points out that while the push-pull technology is ideal for high-density routes, the integration of extra locomotives slightly reduces the overall passenger-carrying capacity per train. Meanwhile, former Railway Board Member Shri Prakash advocates for a time-bound shift toward distributed-power trainsets like Vande Bharat or EMUs, citing their superior energy efficiency and operational convenience.
As Indian Railways balances the needs of different economic strata, the introduction of Amrit Bharat 3.0 signals a commitment to elevating the standard of living for the millions who rely on the national transporter daily. By bringing premium-style features to the affordable segment, the railways are not just moving people—they are moving the nation toward a more comfortable and efficient future.
