India Engages Somali Authorities Following Hijacking of Two Vessels Carrying Indian Mariners

NAIROBI/MOGADISHU — The Indian government has initiated high-level discussions with Somali authorities regarding the alarming seizure of two commercial vessels, a move that has left 22 Indian sailors in the hands of suspected pirates.

The Indian Consulate in Kenya confirmed the incidents, identifying that 16 of the abducted mariners were serving on the MT Sibu, while another six were aboard the MV Lutuf. Government officials in New Delhi have expressed deep concern for the captives, emphasizing that the safety and welfare of the Indian crew members remain the highest priority. Currently, reports indicate that all 22 sailors are believed to be safe.

A Series of Hostile Seizures

The hijackings occurred in two separate incidents within a volatile three-day window:

  • The MT Sibu: An Eritrea-flagged oil tanker, the vessel was seized on August 20 in the Gulf of Aden, approximately 30 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen. At the time of the attack, the ship was carrying a total of 20 crew members.
  • The MV Lutuf: Three days earlier, on August 17, pirates hijacked the Cameroon-flagged MV Lutuf off the coast of Puntland, Somalia. The ship, which carried 10 crew members in total, included six Indian nationals among its personnel.

Diplomatic and Military Response

In response to the crisis, Indian diplomatic representatives have reached out to relevant Somali authorities, urging cooperation to ensure the safe release of the crews.

The situation on the ground remains tense. Both vessels are currently being held off the coast of the Puntland region, an area that has recently been a flashpoint for maritime security operations. The region recently witnessed a targeted aerial strike that resulted in the death of four suspected pirates, signaling a hardening stance against criminal elements in the area.

Military aviation assets are currently active in the region, with warplanes seen patrolling the airspace above the hijacked vessels. Military sources suggest that these aircraft are conducting surveillance as part of a potential effort to secure the ships and rescue the hostages from their captors.

As the international community monitors the evolving situation, the piracy crisis in the Horn of Africa continues to present significant challenges to maritime security and the protection of international trade routes. Authorities remain in a delicate position, balancing the urgency of the sailors’ safety with the risks posed by direct military intervention.
