Injury Blow: Kuldeep Yadav Sidelined for Second Test Against Sri Lanka as Saransh Jain Debuts

COLOMBO – Team India’s preparations for the second Test against Sri Lanka suffered a setback as premier left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav was ruled out of the playing XI due to a persistent viral infection.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that while Yadav has not fully recovered, he remains with the squad and is permitted to take the field solely as a concussion substitute should the need arise.

"Mr. Kuldeep Yadav has not fully recovered from his viral illness. He was unavailable for selection in the Playing XI for the second Test against Sri Lanka," the BCCI stated in an official release.

A Landmark Debut

With Yadav sidelined, the door opened for 33-year-old all-rounder Saransh Jain to make his much-anticipated Test debut. In a poignant moment before the start of play, Jain was presented with his maiden India cap by veteran star Ravindra Jadeja during the team huddle. Jain becomes a notable figure in Indian cricket history, marking the first time since Robin Singh in 1998 that an Indian player has made their international debut after turning 33.

Gill’s Strategic Move

India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first at the R. Premadasa Stadium. Reflecting on the decision, Gill noted that the pitch in Colombo appears to be a more batting-friendly surface than the track used in the opening Test at Galle.

"It looks like a much harder, much better surface compared to Galle," Gill explained. "We are expecting the wicket to play well for the first two or three days, though we anticipate it will start to slow down and offer turn as the game progresses."

Coming off a comprehensive 165-run victory in the first Test, Gill expressed satisfaction with his team’s form but remained grounded. While he rated India’s performance in the series opener as a "nine out of ten," he emphasized the inherent difficulty of maintaining absolute perfection over a five-day format.

"It’s very difficult to have a near-perfect game in Test cricket," Gill added. "We played a dominant match, but there are always areas where we can refine our execution."

The Road Ahead

India currently holds an unassailable 1-0 lead in the series, but the inclusion of debutants highlights the team’s willingness to rotate talent amidst health concerns. Sri Lanka, looking to level the series, has also introduced fresh faces, handing Test caps to Kamil Mishara and Pasindu Sooriyabandara.

As the second Test gets underway, all eyes will be on how Saransh Jain performs on the international stage while the visitors look to maintain their unbeaten momentum in the island nation.
