Devdutt Padikkal Shines with Ton; Irfan Pathan Hails Star as Answer to India’s No. 3 Dilemma
COLOMBO – Devdutt Padikkal has once again cemented his reputation as one of Indian cricket’s brightest prospects, delivering a masterclass in patience and technique to secure his second Test century against Sri Lanka. His imperious 117-run knock on the opening day of the second Test has not only stabilized India’s innings but has also drawn significant praise from cricketing experts, including former all-rounder Irfan Pathan.
A Masterclass at No. 3
Padikkal’s performance was the cornerstone of India’s day as the visitors finished on 300-5. The young batter’s display caught the eye of Pathan, who took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to laud the youngster’s temperament.
"Devdutt Padikkal is giving a much-needed boost to this number 3 spot for Team India in Test cricket. He is pleasing to the eye when he bats," Pathan wrote, highlighting that the Test ton could be the solution to India’s long-standing search for stability at the first-drop position.
Resilience and Partnerships
The innings was not without its trials. Arriving at the crease under pressure after the early dismissals of Yashasvi Jaiswal (45) and KL Rahul (18), Padikkal survived two difficult dropped catches early on. However, he quickly shook off the nerves, settling into a rhythm that saw him occupy the crease for nearly five hours.
His contribution was bolstered by two vital partnerships: a 120-run stand with skipper Shubman Gill—who contributed a fluent 50—and a 74-run partnership with the ever-reliable Ravindra Jadeja, who fell for 43 to the bowling of Asitha Fernando. Although Padikkal was eventually dismissed by off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha, his 193-ball stay, studded with 12 boundaries, provided the foundation India desperately needed.
Injury Concerns and Team Outlook
The day was not entirely without setbacks for the Indian side. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt after sustaining a blow to his forearm while attempting a pull shot. Despite this, India remains in a commanding position as they aim to wrap up the series after a dominant 165-run victory in the opening Test at Galle.
For Sri Lanka, seamer Asitha Fernando emerged as the standout performer with the ball, claiming 3-46. The hosts also made tactical adjustments, handing a Test debut to Kamil Mishara, while India opted to include spin-bowling all-rounder Saransh Jain in place of Kuldeep Yadav. Jain, who boasts an impressive domestic record of 188 wickets and over 2,200 first-class runs, will be looking to make his mark as the Test enters its second day.
