Pears Unveils the Craft Behind the Craft: Why the Iconic Brand is Opening Its Factory Doors
For over two centuries, the sight of a Pears bar—clear, amber, and unmistakably distinct—has been a staple in households across India. While the brand is synonymous with its iconic transparency, it is now leaning into that concept with a new level of radical honesty. In its latest campaign, titled ‘Farak Clear Hai’ (The Difference is Clear), Pears is taking the bold step of pulling back the curtain on its manufacturing process to showcase the true artistry behind its classic soap.
Rather than relying on polished studio sets, the brand’s new film invites consumers into the heart of its actual, humming factory floor. The project serves as an invitation to witness the precision, ingredient management, and human dedication that go into every bar.
Redefining Transparency for the Modern Consumer
In an era where consumers are increasingly skeptical of opaque corporate practices, Pears is repositioning its historical trademark as a modern-day necessity. Abhinav Ravikumar, Chief Marketing Officer for Personal Care at Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), believes that “transparency” today carries a new weight.
“What has changed is what transparency means to consumers today,” says Ravikumar. “They are more informed and more curious about the products they use. They want to understand what goes into them and what those ingredients do.”
For Pears, the core of this narrative is glycerin. By focusing on its “hero ingredient,” the brand aims to prove that its commitment to simplicity isn’t just a marketing trend—it is a 200-year-old truth.
The Intersection of Precision and Emotion
One of the campaign’s greatest challenges was balancing the technical nature of industrial manufacturing with the emotional, multigenerational legacy of the brand. Ravikumar explains that the team avoided the tropes of a sterile factory tour, opting instead to highlight the human element.
“The challenge was to be accurate without making the film feel like a tour. We wanted people to see the process, but more importantly, to feel the intention and care behind it,” he notes. “The precision is the proof of the craft. When you see the care with which ingredients are handled, craftsmanship stops feeling like something from history; you realize it is still being practiced every day.”
Facing the Real-World Lens
Filming inside a live, functioning production facility presented significant logistical hurdles. Because the factory could not halt production for the sake of the cameras, the production team had to work within the existing rhythm of the workspace.
“The creative challenge was to distill that complexity into a simple, engaging story without making it feel technical,” says Ravikumar. “In the end, those constraints became an advantage. The people are real. The process is real. And that honesty is exactly what a film about transparency needed.”
A Strategy of Simplicity
When asked about the strategic difficulties of the project, Ravikumar reveals that the hardest part was deciding what to leave out. With a heritage spanning two centuries, the brand could have focused on history, celebrity, or legacy. Instead, they opted for extreme discipline.
“We chose one idea: transparency. And we used the factory as evidence of it,” he says. “We wanted the product, the people, and the process to speak for themselves.”
Building a “Truth” Platform
Looking ahead, Pears intends to use ‘Farak Clear Hai’ as a foundational platform rather than a standalone advertisement. According to Ravikumar, the goal is to build a consistent “storytelling system” that translates across social media, digital channels, and beyond. By focusing on the tangible “Pears Truth,” the brand aims to remain relevant not by chasing trends, but by proving that its simple, ingredient-conscious philosophy is more resonant today than ever before.
