Sazerac Expands India Portfolio with Launch of American Wolf and Southern Comfort Reserve

Sazerac, the powerhouse behind iconic brands like Buffalo Trace, is marking a major strategic milestone in its international growth by introducing two new whiskies to the Indian market. The company has officially launched American Wolf Double Gold Blended Whiskey and Southern Comfort Reserve, signaling an aggressive push into the world’s largest whisky-consuming nation.

Both new expressions are categorized as Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL), a classification that allows Sazerac to marry the distinct profiles of American whiskeys with locally sourced Indian grain and malt spirits. Notably, the company has prioritized purity in its production process, confirming that neither brand utilizes artificial flavourings.

A Strategic Entry into a Dynamic Market

The launch represents one of Sazerac’s most significant investments in India to date. The products will begin their rollout this August in key urban centers—Pune, Nagpur, and Nashik—with a broader, phased expansion planned for the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.

Diego Bianchi, Sazerac’s vice-president of global marketing, emphasized that the move is designed to cater to the evolving tastes of Indian consumers who are increasingly looking for global influence.

“India represents an exciting and rapidly evolving whisky market, and we see a strong opportunity to introduce consumers to the taste, character and heritage of American whiskey,” said Bianchi. “As Indian consumers draw growing inspiration from American lifestyle, entertainment and culture, we see a clear opportunity to bring that same style to what’s in the glass.”

Defining the Expressions

The two brands target different consumption occasions, reflecting Sazerac’s desire to diversify the local drinking experience:

  • American Wolf: Positioned as “a new breed of whisky” and bottled at 42.8% ABV, this blend is crafted for versatility. Whether enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or mixed with soda, it is aimed at the modern, bold whisky drinker. It will be available in 750ml, 180ml, and 90ml formats, with the 750ml bottle priced at approximately INR 1,070 (US$11).
  • Southern Comfort Reserve: Marking the brand’s return to India, this reserve expression is designed for a more relaxed, approachable experience. It is suggested to be enjoyed on the rocks or with a light splash of water. It is currently rolling out in 750ml, with smaller formats to follow, retailing at approximately INR 1,500 (US$16) for the 750ml bottle.

Building on a Global Legacy

This latest Sazerac expansion follows a period of intense activity for the group. The new Indian expressions join a prestige portfolio that already includes Buffalo Trace Bourbon, WL Weller, Benchmark, and Sazerac Rye. Furthermore, Sazerac continues to solidify its footprint in India through its majority stake in the Paul John Indian single malt distillery in Goa.

Beyond its Indian operations, the company has been active globally, recently announcing the acquisition of UK-based Au Vodka and its line of ready-to-drink cocktails, alongside the purchase of the Garrard County Distilling Company facility in Kentucky.

As Indian consumers continue to trade up and explore international styles, Sazerac’s “two-pronged” approach—pairing the bold identity of American Wolf with the heritage of Southern Comfort—positions the company to capture a significant share of the country’s discerning spirit enthusiasts.
