Viral Video Claiming Chinese Incursion in India Debunked as Old Footage of Domestic Clashes

A viral video circulating on social media, purportedly showing Chinese troops encroaching upon Indian territory, has been debunked by authorities and independent fact-checkers as a misidentified clip of a domestic paramilitary incident.

The video, which gained traction on platforms like Facebook and Instagram in mid-August 2026, features a military vehicle speeding past women carrying wooden poles on a remote mountain road. Accompanying captions, written in Hindi, alarmingly claim that “Chinese troops have intruded into the country” and are “wreaking havoc,” while other overlays demand urgent military intervention.

Domestic Conflict, Not Foreign Incursion

Investigations confirm that the footage is not from the India-China border. Instead, the video shows an incident from April 2026 in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur. The vehicle in the clip belongs to the Assam Rifles, an Indian paramilitary force tasked with counter-insurgency and border security, rather than the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

The incident occurred when an Assam Rifles convoy forced its way through barricades set up by local villagers in the Talui and Hoomi areas of Ukhrul district. Reports from the Ukhrul Times and other local media outlets at the time confirmed that the maneuver led to a tense standoff and left two civilians critically injured, triggering outrage among local tribal groups.

A History of Misinformation

The false claim gained momentum following recent reports from the People’s Party of Arunachal, which alleged that the PLA had been obstructing Indian forces’ access to traditional grazing grounds along the disputed border. While these allegations sparked legitimate concern, Indian Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju officially rejected claims of Chinese encroachment on August 19.

The tension along the frontier is a long-standing geopolitical issue. Following a lethal brawl in 2020 that claimed the lives of 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers, and a significant clash in Arunachal Pradesh in 2022, the region remains hyper-sensitive. Local law enforcement has officially distanced the viral footage from any international border conflict. The Station House Officer (SHO) of the Somdal Police Station in Manipur confirmed to researchers that the event was strictly a local confrontation between the Assam Rifles and Tangkhul Naga civilians.
