Trump’s SpaceX stake: US President invested up to $50,000 in Musk’s company - report

Financial Disclosure Reveals President Trump Held Stake in SpaceX Following Landmark IPO

A recently released financial disclosure has unveiled a previously unknown fiscal connection between the White House and the private space sector, revealing that President Donald Trump held an investment in Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

According to the documentation, President Trump purchased shares in SpaceX valued between $15,001 and $50,000 on June 23. This transaction was part of a broader series of over 1,000 stock trades executed by the President throughout the month of June. The filing, which was signed on August 12 and made public on August 22, highlights a complex intersection of private financial interests and public policy.

The investment surfaced shortly after SpaceX completed the largest-ever U.S. Initial Public Offering (IPO) on June 12. Following the listing, the company reached a staggering valuation of $1.77 trillion, solidifying its position as a titan across the satellite, artificial intelligence, and aerospace markets.

Managing Conflicts of Interest

The timing of the investment has drawn attention because the Trump administration frequently makes regulatory and procurement decisions that directly impact SpaceX’s business model. As a major U.S. military contractor, SpaceX relies on consistent federal approvals, and just this past Thursday, the President directed his administration to aggressively expand the number of commercial space launches in the United States—a move that stands to benefit the industry’s dominant player.

Addressing potential concerns regarding these ties, White House spokesman Davis Ingle stated that the President does not maintain personal control over his investment portfolio.

“Neither President Trump nor any member of his family has any ability to direct, influence or provide input regarding how the portfolio is invested or when investments are bought or sold,” Ingle told Reuters. He noted that third-party financial institutions manage the portfolio independently, often mirroring “recognized indexes, such as the Schwab 1000.”

Broadening Scrutiny

The disclosure of the President’s stake coincides with growing scrutiny regarding the financial entanglements of other high-ranking officials within the administration. Recent reports have highlighted that Kelly Loeffler, the chief of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and a member of the Trump cabinet, realized substantial gains from the SpaceX IPO.

Loeffler’s connection to Musk’s ventures dates back to early investments in xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence firm, which later merged with SpaceX. Analysts from PitchBook, including Franco Granda, estimate that Loeffler’s returns from these investments—including a second round of funding executed after her nomination to lead the SBA—could range into the millions, depending on the specific timing and scale of her initial capital commitments.

As the administration continues its push to expand the domestic space sector, these overlapping financial interests remain a focal point for ethics watchdogs and political observers alike.
