The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of veteran director and screenwriter Kuku Kohli, who passed away on Tuesday evening at the age of 77. The filmmaker, celebrated for shaping the careers of several Bollywood icons, succumbed to a massive cardiac arrest.
The news was confirmed by a spokesperson for his wife, the legendary actress Aruna Irani. According to representatives, the director had been battling health complications earlier in the week. He first experienced restlessness on Monday night, leading to a mild heart attack. He was subsequently admitted to Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital, where he underwent a successful angioplasty.
While his recovery initially seemed stable, his condition took a tragic turn on Tuesday. According to reports, the couple was in regular communication throughout the day; in fact, Aruna Irani was on a call with him when his health suddenly deteriorated. Shortly after exchanging lighthearted messages, the director stopped responding, marking a sudden and somber end to a life dedicated to cinema.
A Legacy of Iconic Cinema
Born Avtar Kohli in Peshawar on June 4, 1949, Kuku Kohli spent over three decades establishing his footprint in Bollywood. His formative years were spent as an assistant to the legendary Raj Kapoor, working on timeless classics such as Bobby, Prem Rog, and Satyam Shivam Sundaram. He further honed his directorial vision while working on pivotal projects like Betaab and Arjun.
However, Kohli is perhaps best remembered for his 1991 directorial debut, Phool Aur Kaante. The film was a cultural phenomenon that launched the career of Ajay Devgn—who made an iconic entry performing a split between two moving motorcycles—and achieved diamond jubilee status at the box office.

Following the massive success of his debut, Kohli became a staple of 1990s commercial cinema. He directed several star-studded hits, including:
