Target Issues Apology After Pulling “Offensive” Halloween Costume Amid Online Backlash

MINNEAPOLIS — Retail giant Target has issued a formal apology and removed a children’s Halloween costume from its inventory following widespread accusations that the product invoked racist tropes reminiscent of 19th-century minstrel shows and blackface.

The product, listed as the “Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume,” was sold through the retailer’s seasonal “Hyde and EEK Boutique” brand. Shortly after it appeared online, social media users began flagging the design, arguing that it relied on offensive racial imagery.

In a statement provided to FOX Business, Target spokesperson Brian Harper-Tibaldo confirmed that the company had yanked the item from its website and stores.

“As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry,” Harper-Tibaldo said. “The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment. We know this is especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members and partners. Removing the costume is an important first step, and the company is looking closely at how this happened and what needs to change to ensure this won’t happen again.”

The controversy has sparked fresh criticism regarding the company’s internal review processes. On platforms such as Threads, users questioned the retailer’s oversight, with one commenter suggesting that the incident highlights a lapse in sensitivity following the company’s recent shifts in corporate policy.

The incident marks another reputational hurdle for the Minneapolis-based chain. The company has faced a series of challenges in recent years, including intense public scrutiny over its 2023 Pride Collection and subsequent shifts in its corporate social responsibility strategy.

In recent months, Target has joined a broader trend among major corporations to pull back on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The retailer has scaled back specific programs aimed at increasing the representation of Black employees and supporting Black-owned businesses, citing a need to remain aligned with “the evolving external landscape” following various executive-level pressures.

This pivot away from previous DEI commitments has drawn sharp criticism from segments of its customer base and advocacy groups who argue that such retreats undermine the company’s stated commitment to inclusion. The controversy surrounding the offensive Halloween costume has only amplified these concerns, fueling questions about whether the removal of these internal departments and oversight committees contributed to the failure to identify the imagery before the product reached consumers.

Target has not yet disclosed the internal findings of its investigation into how the costume was approved for sale. For now, the retailer remains focused on damage control as it attempts to move past the latest in a string of controversies that have complicated its brand identity in a polarized retail environment.
