Amidst the mounting pressure, Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel has weighed in on the nature of the heated exchanges, suggesting that the abrasive atmosphere is a byproduct of the fierce competitive spirit defining the series.

The ICC’s match officials have had a busy week in Colombo. Following a series of volatile interactions on the opening day, India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando were both hit with heavy sanctions. “I just think the heat and humidity sometimes get to the players,” Morkel noted. “Although we need to play under the code and respect the game, a bit of banter between the boys is always good to see. It will definitely bring out the fighting and competitive spirit in the game.”
Morkel emphasized that as long as the exchanges do not breach the established codes of conduct, he views the verbal sparring as a healthy, albeit intense, component of Test cricket.
