Fable: Find Out How Combat Works After Our First Hands-on

Mastering the Blade and Spell: An In-Depth Look at Fable’s Evolved Combat System

After months of tantalizing glimpses—ranging from deep-dive story trailers to detailed looks at Albion’s vibrant “Living Population”—Playground Games finally pulled back the curtain on the core of the experience at Gamescom 2026. For the first time, members of the press and creator community were given hands-on time with the combat system, and the results suggest a sophisticated evolution of the franchise’s iconic mechanics.

A Quest Into the Depths

The demo, titled ‘Mud and Death,’ dropped players into a haunting, once-flooded mine alongside Humphry, the leader of the Heroes’ Guild. Tasked with clearing out a surge of ghosts and skeletons, players were invited to put the game’s “Strength, Skill, and Will” philosophy to the test. By swapping between two distinct loadouts, it became clear that Playground Games has crafted a combat loop that is as fluid as it is tactical.

The Return of the Trifecta

At the heart of the experience is the ability to seamlessly transition between melee, ranged, and magical combat.

  • Melee: Relying on the heavy-hitting two-handed Bower Hammer, players can engage in visceral, high-impact combat. Beyond simple strikes, the game introduces a responsive parry system—capable of decapitating skeletons—and rewarding finishers that make the Hero feel like a true legend of the craft.
  • Magic: The “Will” system returns with a robust selection of spells. Players can experiment with crowd control through the Lift spell, which can be followed up by a devastating ground slam or a surge of Lightning. Utility spells like Rush provide unmatched mobility, allowing players to teleport behind foes or gain verticality to snipe archers from above. And, in a nod to the series’ irreverent roots, the Befowl spell allows players to transform enemies into chickens—even the undead variety.
  • Ranged: Whether using the high-accuracy Deepwood Bow or the rapid-fire Repeater Crossbow, ranged combat serves as the perfect complement to close-quarters fighting. Aiming for weak points—such as an enemy’s legs to cause a stumble—adds a layer of skill-based depth that rewards precise play.

A Living, Breathing Threat

The enemies in the new Fable are far from mindless fodder. The Hollow Folk arrive in specialized archetypes, requiring players to adapt on the fly. The addition of Wraiths, which act as summoners capable of spawning more enemies, forces players to prioritize targets strategically. This is best exemplified by the Lantern Keeper mini-boss, a towering aerial foe that tests every aspect of a player’s arsenal, from managing its fire-breath attacks to exploiting its exposed weak points.

The combat feels deliberately designed for creative expression. Rather than being confined to rigid loadouts, the game encourages players to chain together abilities, effectively blending spells and steel into a continuous flow of high-octane action.

The Road to Albion

As the February 2027 launch approaches, the anticipation for Playground Games’ reboot is reaching a fever pitch. With its blend of refined, deep combat and the franchise’s signature dark humor, the new Fable promises to offer an experience where every choice—from the weapon you wield to the spells you master—truly defines your legend.

Fable launches February 23, 2027, on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass. Those looking to jump in early can secure the Premium Edition for early access starting February 18.
