Sunil Narine Makes History: Becomes Only Second Bowler to Claim 650 T20 Wickets

In a monumental achievement that cements his status as a legendary figure in white-ball cricket, Sunil Narine has etched his name into the record books. On Thursday, the veteran spinner became only the second bowler in the history of the sport to claim 650 T20 wickets.

Narine reached this historic milestone during a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2026 clash between his side, the Trinbago Knight Riders, and the Saint Lucia Kings at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba. Entering the match needing just a single scalp to achieve the feat, the 37-year-old showcased his signature precision, finishing with economical figures of 1/27 from his four-over quota.

The landmark moment arrived during the 12th over of the Saint Lucia Kings’ innings when Narine trapped West Indies batter John Campbell lbw. This dismissal brought the Trinidadian star’s career tally to 650, placing him in an elite club previously occupied only by Afghanistan’s spin sensation, Rashid Khan. Currently, Rashid leads the all-time charts with 736 wickets in 547 matches.

A Legacy of Consistency

Narine and Rashid have carved out a significant gap between themselves and the rest of the world’s most prolific T20 bowlers. Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo sits in third place with 631 wickets, followed by veteran leg-spinner Imran Tahir with 582.

Narine’s latest achievement is a testament to his enduring impact on the game. He currently stands as the CPL’s all-time leading wicket-taker with 137 dismissals, narrowly edging out Tahir’s 135. His influence is equally profound in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has been a pillar for the Kolkata Knight Riders since 2012. He remains the only overseas player in IPL history to surpass 200 wickets, and he holds the record for the most wickets taken for a single franchise in the league’s history.

More Than Just a Bowler

What separates Narine from his peers is his sustained brilliance in an era where batting records are broken with regularity. Even as T20 cricket has evolved to favor high-scoring totals, Narine has maintained a remarkable career economy rate of 6.79 in the IPL. In the 2026 IPL season alone, he claimed 15 wickets while conceding runs at a stingy 6.65 per over.

Beyond his mastery with the ball, Narine has evolved into a formidable all-rounder. With 4,881 runs across 390 T20 innings, his versatility continues to provide immense value to every team he represents.

As he celebrates this latest record, fans and experts alike are reflecting on the sheer longevity of his career. Having officially Sunil Narine makes T20 history, the spinner has once again proven why he is widely regarded as one of the greatest T20 cricketers to ever grace the game.
