From the Stars to the Sea: NASA Astronaut and Navy SEAL Jonny Kim Returns to Active Duty
HOUSTON — After a decade defined by historic achievements in both low-Earth orbit and the halls of academia, Lieutenant Commander Jonny Kim is set to conclude his tenure with NASA this Thursday. The decorated veteran, whose career trajectory has taken him from the frontlines of Middle Eastern combat zones to the International Space Station (ISS), is returning to full-time active-duty service with the U.S. Navy.
Kim, a former Navy SEAL who transitioned into the astronaut corps in 2017, will pivot to a new challenge within the naval aviation community. His departure from the space agency marks the end of a chapter that has seen him become one of the most uniquely qualified individuals in the U.S. military.
“Contributing to space exploration and serving NASA has been the honor of a lifetime,” Kim said in a statement. “Throughout my career, I’ve learned that beyond the missions, the training, and the hardware, success always comes down to the people. They are our greatest asset, and leading with love and empathy is how we achieve the impossible.”
A Resume Like No Other
Kim’s transition from elite special operations to the vanguard of space exploration is nothing short of legendary. Born in Los Angeles, he enlisted in the Navy in 2002. As a member of SEAL Team Three, he completed over 100 combat missions across two deployments in the Middle East, serving as a combat medic, sniper, navigator, and point man. His valor in the field earned him the Silver Star and the Bronze Star with Combat “V.”
His path to medicine was forged in the heat of conflict. During a 2006 deployment to Ramadi, Iraq, Kim witnessed the limitations of field medicine firsthand. The frustration of being able to only stabilize, rather than definitively treat, wounded comrades and civilians served as the catalyst for his medical ambitions.
Following his service, Kim graduated summa cum laude in mathematics from the University of San Diego before earning his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Remarkably, he also achieved the rare distinction of being a naval aviator and a flight surgeon simultaneously, having completed rigorous training at both Naval Air Stations in Texas and Florida, as well as the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute.
Contributions to Human Spaceflight
During his time with NASA, Kim became a fixture of the agency’s future-focused initiatives. He served as a capsule communicator (CAPCOM) at the Johnson Space Center and played a pivotal role in the development of the Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface by 2028.
In 2025, Kim realized the ultimate astronaut ambition, conducting eight months of intensive scientific research aboard the International Space Station. Over the course of the mission, he orbited the Earth thousands of times, logging over 104 million miles in space.
Looking Toward the Future
Despite his meteoric rise, Kim has often described his journey as a series of evolving goals rather than a pre-planned grand design. He previously shared with Military Times that his time as a SEAL served as the foundational benchmark for how he has approached the rest of his life.
As he prepares to depart for his new assignment in naval aviation training, Kim expressed a readiness to translate his experiences in orbit back into his naval career.
“I look forward to carrying my commitment to service, my enduring love for space and technology, and the hard-earned lessons of this past decade into my next chapter,” Kim said.
