NBEMS Expands FMGE Schedule: Third Exam Set for October; January Session Postponed
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has announced a significant shift in its examination calendar, confirming that the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) will now transition from a biannual cycle to being conducted three times per year.
As part of this revised strategy, the board has scheduled an additional examination session for October 31, 2026. This computer-based test will be held at various designated centers across India.
January 2027 Session Rescheduled
In conjunction with the addition of the October exam, the board has opted to postpone the regular session originally slated for January 9, 2027. NBEMS officials indicated that the examination will be moved to a later date within January or February 2027. Specific dates and updated schedules for both the new October session and the deferred January/February session are expected to be released in an official Information Bulletin, which will be available on the board’s portal at natboard.edu.in.
Addressing Student Concerns
The decision to increase the frequency of the FMGE follows a period of significant agitation from foreign medical graduates. Recently, students staged protests in New Delhi’s Gautam Nagar—including a hunger strike—to voice their frustrations regarding the outcome of the June 2026 examination.
The June results had revealed a pass rate of only 12.38%, with only 4,640 of the 37,448 candidates successfully clearing the test. Candidates cited concerns over the low pass percentage and demanded greater transparency in the evaluation process. While the NBEMS has remained firm on its commitment to maintaining rigorous professional standards for medical practitioners, the introduction of a third annual attempt is seen as a responsive measure to provide eligible graduates with more frequent opportunities to qualify and enter the workforce.
What is the FMGE?
The FMGE serves as a mandatory screening test for Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who have completed their primary medical education in institutions outside of India. To be legally permitted to practice medicine within the country, candidates must successfully pass this examination and fulfill all other regulatory requirements stipulated by the medical governing bodies.
