RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Champions Unity and Pluralism During Landmark New York Address

NEW YORK – Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat delivered a powerful message of interfaith harmony and universal oneness during his recent visit to the United States. Addressing the “One World One Humanity” event in New York, Bhagwat emphasized that the core tenets of Hinduism are rooted in the protection of diversity and the recognition of human dignity.

In a direct rejection of exclusionary ideologies, Bhagwat stated, “If any Hindu thinks that there should be no Muslims in India, then he is not a Hindu.”

The event, organized by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD), served as a “landmark Raksha Bandhan gathering.” During his address, Bhagwat framed his message around the ancient philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the belief that the world is one family. He argued that while religious paths and rituals may differ, they are all ultimately aimed at reaching the same truth.

“If you want to call yourself Hindu, then you must believe that all paths lead to the same goal,” Bhagwat asserted. “Every human has dignity. There is no difference between human beings.”

Bridging Cultures: Bharat and the US

Drawing parallels between the pluralism of the United States and the Indian concept of “unity in diversity,” Bhagwat noted that both ideologies share a common DNA. “Diversity has to be protected as it is the rule of nature, and unity is the universal truth,” he said.

He acknowledged that human perceptions are often clouded by what he termed the “software” created in our minds, which leads to different interpretations of the same objective truth. While noting that he is not a religious authority, he highlighted that the traditional Indian perspective is one that welcomes diverse paths toward divinity.

Global Outreach and Engagement

Bhagwat’s visit to New York is part of an extensive global outreach program marking the centenary year of the RSS, with planned stops in Canada and the United Kingdom. Throughout his US tour, the RSS chief has engaged with Indian-American business leaders, community representatives, and members of the diaspora to discuss the organization’s vision for a unified global society.

Prior to his keynote address at Madison Square Garden, images of Bhagwat were displayed on prominent billboards in Times Square, emphasizing the themes of “Resolve, Harmony, and Dialogue.” His itinerary also included a visit to the ISKCON temple and the Bhakti Centre, where he participated in community service initiatives, including food distribution for the homeless.

The RSS has maintained that the current global tour is designed to foster open dialogue, encouraging anyone interested in the organization’s philosophy to participate in discussions. As the RSS continues its centennial outreach, Bhagwat’s call for harmony and the rejection of religious discrimination highlights an evolving narrative of the organization’s engagement with the global community.
