Massive Search and Rescue Operation Launched After Passenger Ship Begins Taking on Water off Kyrenia

KYRENIA – A major emergency response is currently underway off the coast of Northern Cyprus after a passenger vessel began taking on water, sparking fears that the ship could sink.

The Turkish Interior Ministry reported this afternoon that the vessel, which was carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members, issued a distress signal while located approximately four nautical miles off the coast of Kyrenia Port.

Authorities confirmed that a comprehensive search and rescue operation was launched immediately upon receiving reports that the ship was in danger of sinking.

The scale of the response reflects the gravity of the situation. According to an official statement released by the Ministry, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Coast Guard Command has deployed four marine vessels to the site. They are being supported by the passenger ship AKGÜNLER 3, which was redirected to the scene to assist in the emergency.

The response has been further bolstered by the Coast Guard Command, which dispatched an additional five marine vessels and two rescue helicopters to the area. Furthermore, the Naval Forces Command has assigned six naval vessels to the region to ensure that all necessary resources are available to stabilize the situation and evacuate those on board.

“Search and rescue efforts are being carried out meticulously and in coordination among the relevant units,” the Interior Ministry stated, noting that authorities are working urgently to ensure the safety of all 267 individuals involved.
