Arshad Warsi Weighs In on the Nepotism Debate: ‘Talent Is the Ultimate Decider’
The discourse surrounding nepotism in Bollywood has long been a polarizing topic, but actor Arshad Warsi believes it is time to shift the focus from lineage to merit. In a recent candid conversation, the veteran actor shared his nuanced perspective on the industry’s “star kid” culture, asserting that while industry connections may open doors, they do not guarantee longevity.
The Origin of a Buzzword
Reflecting on the industry landscape, Warsi noted that the term “nepotism” was not a central fixture of film discussions when he first broke into the scene. He credits fellow actress Kangana Ranaut for bringing the subject to the forefront of public consciousness.
“Kangana came out with the idea of nepotism, and then it got big, and everyone started talking about it,” Warsi shared in an interview with Filmygyan. “Yes, it’s there, but it doesn’t bother me. My heart tells me at the end of the day it’s about how talented you are and that’s how far you will go.”
The Unseen Burden of Expectations
Beyond the perceived advantages of being a star kid, Warsi highlighted the often-overlooked psychological pressure that comes with having famous parents. Drawing on his experience as a father to his children, Zeke and Zene Zoe, he argued that the industry and the public often impose unfair expectations on the next generation.
“It’s not easy for a star kid. The expectations are so high,” Warsi explained. “The impression other people have of them, because they are my kids, is that they have to be good actors. I feel like, ‘oh my god, don’t say that,’ because everyone has their own personalities.”
Warsi emphasized that while the industry might offer a head start, the safety net is thin for those who lack substance. “The maximum that can happen to them is a door gets opened faster, but if you are not talented, it shuts down quickly,” he added.
Focusing on Craft Over Clout
For Warsi, the goal for his children—should they choose to pursue acting—is not to rely on their surname, but to prioritize the mastery of their craft. He noted that the current generation of aspiring actors is more technically prepared than ever, making it essential for his children to be equally equipped if they want to thrive in a competitive landscape.
As for his own career, the actor continues to balance his craft with significant projects. Warsi is currently gearing up for the release of Ghamasaan. Helmed by acclaimed director Tigmanshu Dhulia, the film also stars Pratik Gandhi, Rajpal Yadav, and Ishita Dutta. Ghamasaan is slated for a digital premiere on ZEE5 on September 11.
