Stuart Broad Labels Imam-ul-Haq’s On-Field Warm-Up an ‘Act’ Amidst Injury Controversy at Lord’s
LONDON – Former England fast-bowling legend Stuart Broad has publicly questioned the transparency of Pakistan opening batter Imam-ul-Haq, labeling his public injury rehabilitation routine at Lord’s as “all for show.”
The controversy erupted during the second Test between England and Pakistan, where Imam was ruled out of further play after sustaining a low-grade strain to his left calf while fielding on the opening day. The injury proved costly for the visitors, leaving them a batter short during a critical second-innings run chase as they slid to a comprehensive 194-run defeat, effectively putting them 2-0 down in the three-match series.
The “Act” Under Scrutiny
Tensions rose on the fourth morning of the Test when Imam was spotted on the sidelines at Lord’s. Wearing heavy strapping on his calf, the opener engaged in light batting practice, visibly hobbling as he moved. While the Pakistan management suggested there was an outside chance he could bat if needed, Broad—providing commentary for Sky Sports—was visibly unimpressed by the optics of the situation.
“That’s all for show,” Broad remarked on air. “He has got a bit of stick from the media and maybe his teammates. Whatever. You can do that inside the indoor school without anyone seeing; you don’t have to come wearing shorts and tape and hobble around like that. I am not impressed with that. Sorry.”
Lingering Doubts Over Injury History
Broad’s criticism was amplified by the resurfacing of previous allegations made by former Pakistan chief selector Mohammad Wasim. Wasim had previously claimed that the opener had a history of exaggerating injuries to avoid match play.
Wasim recalled an incident from 2022, alleging that the team’s medical staff had been prompted to express concerns about the batter’s reliability well before official assessments were finalized. While Pakistan team management has stood by the clinical diagnosis of a calf strain, the recurring questions regarding the player’s commitment have cast a shadow over his participation in the series.
Pakistan’s Batting Woes Continue
The backdrop to the controversy was yet another dismal performance by the Pakistan top order. Chasing a formidable target of 389, the tourists collapsed to 14/3. Although Saud Shakeel offered a glimmer of hope with a gritty 97-run knock—supported by a partnership with Shan Masood—the resistance was ultimately futile.
England’s bowling unit, led by Ollie Robinson’s four-wicket haul and clinical support from Josh Tongue and Jofra Archer, dismantled the Pakistan lineup for 194.
