Root Urges Maturity After Series Win, Raises Concerns Over Dukes Ball Performance
LONDON – England’s talismanic batter Joe Root has struck a balance between celebration and caution following his side’s dominant 194-run victory at Lord’s, which secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match Test series against Pakistan.
While the win marks a significant milestone—representing England’s first multi-match Test series triumph since 2024—Root is eager to ensure the team’s off-field conduct matches the professionalism they have displayed on the pitch. “I’ve always been quite good at understanding and eventually problem-solving,” Root said. “I might have been LBW a few times, but lots of those have been umpire’s call – if they go the other way, it might not be as much of a talking point. I know I’m a good player, and I’d like to think there’s a big score around the corner.”
Questions Raised Over Equipment
Beyond his own form, Root has ignited a discussion regarding the equipment being utilized in this year’s international circuit. Specifically, the former captain has questioned the consistency of the Dukes ball, suggesting that the batch used this summer feels markedly different from previous years.
Root noted that the current balls feel firmer and appear to possess a different type of lacquer on the seam, which he believes is impacting the game’s dynamics.
“As a batter, when you practise, they’re cracking your bats more frequently,” Root explained. He further suggested that the harder composition of the ball might be causing more damage to the pitch surfaces, leading to increased and unpredictable movement off the deck. “I think they’re affecting the wickets as well. I think they’re denting more. If they dent the wicket, it’s going to seam off the dents as well.”
With the series trophy already in hand, England heads into the final Test with a sense of security. For Root, however, the mission remains clear: to refine his technique, navigate the challenges of the current playing conditions, and reclaim his status as the cornerstone of the English batting order.
