Surge in Visitors Strains South West Pools as Popularity Hits Record Highs

The UK’s outdoor swimming scene is experiencing a significant boom, with popular coastal and inland facilities reporting a sharp rise in attendance. While the surge in interest is a welcome boost for local leisure providers, it has also introduced mounting pressures on staffing, facility maintenance, and operational capacity.

At the Bude Sea Pool, the recent influx of swimmers has been both a blessing and a challenge. Jodie Harper, communications manager at the site, described the trend as “fantastic,” noting that it is encouraging to see the local community and visitors alike utilizing the space. However, she acknowledged that the high volume of footfall has placed “additional demands” on the pool’s dedicated team, who must work harder than ever to manage the facility.

The trend is echoed across the region, where infrastructure improvements are directly correlating with increased demand. In Bovey Tracey, management reported that recent accessibility refurbishments—specifically the introduction of improved steps—have made a “big difference” in attracting a wider range of swimmers, leading to noticeably higher usage rates.

The capacity strain is perhaps most visible in Plymouth, where Mount Wise Pools has seen a dramatic climb in visitor numbers. Records show that attendance reached 29,577 by the end of July this year, up from 25,146 during the same period in 2023. According to Stephanie Lewis, head of business and commercial development at Plymouth Active, these sessions have been regularly hitting capacity.

Lewis attributed part of the growth to the recent spell of warmer weather, which has not only driven more people to the water but has changed visitor behavior. “The warmer water has encouraged visitors to stay for longer,” she explained, noting that many swimmers are now opting to remain for the duration of their entire allotted session rather than leaving early.

As these pools navigate this period of heightened popularity, the challenge for operators remains balancing the enthusiastic public demand with the physical and logistical limitations of their facilities. For now, the focus remains on ensuring that staff can continue to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for the thousands of people flocking to the water each week.
