Maruti Suzuki Eyes Expansion into Compact EV Segment, Emphasizes Charging Infrastructure Growth

NEW DELHI: India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, is signaling a strategic shift toward the compact electric vehicle (EV) market. However, the company remains cautious, emphasizing that a robust, nationwide charging ecosystem must precede any aggressive push into the smaller car segment.

During the company’s recent annual general meeting (AGM), Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi outlined a measured approach to electrification. While Maruti Suzuki is committed to diversifying its EV portfolio, Takeuchi noted that smaller, mass-market electric models will only be introduced once the nation’s charging infrastructure reaches a state of readiness that guarantees peace of mind for consumers.

A Measured Entry into the EV Era

Maruti Suzuki marked a historic milestone this year with the launch of the e Vitara, a mid-size SUV manufactured at the company’s state-of-the-art Hansalpur facility in Gujarat. Rather than flooding the market with multiple electric offerings, the automaker is focusing on a symbiotic growth model where product availability is strictly tied to the accessibility of dependable charging stations.

This cautious rollout is a deliberate effort to mitigate “range anxiety”—a primary hurdle for potential EV adopters in India.

Building a Nationwide Backbone

To address these infrastructure concerns, Maruti Suzuki has launched an ambitious initiative to expand its charging footprint. The company has already formed strategic alliances with 13 major charge-point operators. This collaborative effort has resulted in the establishment of more than 2,000 exclusive charging points spanning over 1,100 cities.

Looking ahead, the company has set a bold target: providing its customers access to more than 100,000 charging points by the end of the decade. A key pillar of this roadmap is the development of a comprehensive charging network along India’s major highways and expressways, ensuring that long-distance electric travel becomes a viable reality for its users.

The Continued Dominance of Small Cars

Maruti Suzuki’s interest in smaller EVs arrives at an opportune time, as the company continues to see significant traction in its conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) business. Despite the industry’s shift toward SUVs, the demand for Maruti’s entry-level, smaller cars remains remarkably resilient.

According to Takeuchi, the company’s small-car segment recorded a robust 63% increase in sales volume during the April-July period. This strong performance highlights the enduring preference of Indian consumers for affordable, fuel-efficient compact vehicles—a segment where Maruti Suzuki remains the undisputed market leader.

By balancing its traditional strength in compact cars with a long-term, infrastructure-first strategy for EVs, Maruti Suzuki appears poised to maintain its market dominance as the Indian automotive landscape undergoes a slow but steady transition toward cleaner mobility.
