New Pop-Up Venue to Spotlight the Future of Scotland’s Built Environment
A dynamic new hub for architectural discourse and design innovation is set to launch in the heart of Scotland’s capital. Starting September 15, the Edinburgh Futures Institute will host A&DS:SpACE, a temporary, high-profile venue dedicated to investigating the vital intersection of architecture, sustainable design, and the built environment.
A collaborative project between Architecture and Design Scotland (A&DS) and the Space for Architecture, Carbon & Environment (SpACE), the initiative aims to bridge the gap between industry professionals and the public. By offering a dedicated space for exhibitions, workshops, and critical debate, the project seeks to encourage a deeper understanding of how our surroundings influence our daily lives.
A Diverse Programme of Innovation
The venue is slated for a 14-week residency, featuring a packed schedule that addresses some of the most pressing challenges facing the country today. The inaugural programme includes:
- Imagine If: An interactive exhibition centered on the future of housing and placemaking.
- Academic Excellence: A showcase of the winning entries from the A&DS and RIAS Scottish Student Awards for Architecture.
- Climate Action: A dedicated climate clinic and a series of events held in conjunction with Scotland’s Climate Week.
- RIAS Showcase: A retrospective exhibition of the latest RIAS Award-winning projects.
- Sustainable Construction: The “Mass Timber Revolution” exhibit, which investigates how timber can lead the charge in decarbonizing the construction sector.
- Technology in Design: A deep dive into the evolving role of AI within modern design practices.
Bridging the Gap
For industry leaders, the venue represents a significant step forward in public engagement. Jim MacDonald, Chief Executive of A&DS, emphasized that the space is designed to be as much a resource for professionals as it is a destination for the curious public.
“A&DS:SpACE is an opportunity to open up conversations about the buildings, places and environments that affect all our lives,” said MacDonald. “From climate action and housing to new technologies and design innovation, the programme reflects the breadth of issues facing the built environment today.”
The selection of the Edinburgh Futures Institute as the site for this pop-up venue provides a fitting backdrop for the discussions. Rab Bennetts of SpACE praised the location, noting that it offers an ideal setting for such an ambitious undertaking.
