A Tribute to Rebellion: M.A.D.Editions Unveils the M.A.D.3 Vincent Calabrese

In the rarefied world of independent watchmaking, few names command as much respect for pure, unadulterated creativity as Vincent Calabrese. Now, through a remarkable collaboration, the legendary watchmaker’s iconic “Baladin” concept has been reimagined for a new generation. The result is the M.A.D.3 Vincent Calabrese, a timepiece that blends high-complication ingenuity with the accessible, avant-garde spirit of the M.A.D.Editions universe.

The Troublemaker of Watchmaking

To understand the significance of this release, one must appreciate the man behind it. For over 50 years, Vincent Calabrese has operated as an outsider—a self-proclaimed “troublemaker of watchmaking” (l’enquiquineur de l’horlogerie). A co-founder of the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) in 1985, Calabrese spent decades questioning conventions, from his revolutionary architecture for the Corum Golden Bridge to his countless patents for tourbillons and wandering displays.

The M.A.D.3 draws its soul from Calabrese’s “Baladin” concept. Disturbed by the cold, abrupt nature of traditional jumping-hour watches, he sought a way to make the passage of time feel more organic. His solution was a brilliant fusion: a jumping hour that travels in a wandering motion around the dial, turning the transition into a progressive, visual journey rather than a sudden snap.

Engineering the Impossible: From Artisan to Accessible

Translating an artisanal, experimental complication into a reliable, series-produced watch is no small feat. The M.A.D.Editions team, under the creative guidance of Max Büsser, undertook a complete overhaul of the wandering hours module.

Powered by an optimized La Joux-Perret G111 calibre—a proven base used in previous M.A.D.1S and M.A.D.2 models—the movement was recalibrated to meet the energy demands of the new complication. By refining tolerances and strengthening energy transmission, the team successfully maintained the fluid charm of the original Baladin while ensuring modern-day reliability and stability.

A Balanced Modern Aesthetic

While the movement honors the past, the case design brings the watch firmly into the M.A.D.Editions fold. Designed by Eric Giroud, the 40mm stainless steel case features the brand’s signature floating lugs and layered architecture, yet adopts a more restrained, traditional stance than its predecessors. With a controlled thickness of 12.7mm and dual domed sapphire crystals, the watch sits comfortably on the wrist, balancing its technical complexity with everyday wearability.

The dial layout is a masterclass in clean, functional design. The jumping hour is displayed in a circular window that orbits the dial, serving as both the hour indicator and, through its movement, a subtle nod to the passing minutes. A central seconds hand adds a rare level of animation for this type of complication, while generous applications of Super-LumiNova ensure that the display remains vibrant in low-light conditions.

Availability and Pricing

The M.A.D.3 Vincent Calabrese arrives in two distinct flavors: a striking blue version and a sophisticated pink edition. The blue model will be made available to the public via a raffle system, while the pink variant is reserved for “The Tribe” and friends of the brand.

Both versions are paired with a beige leather strap and a stainless steel folding buckle. Priced at CHF 2,900 (excluding taxes), this piece offers an unprecedented opportunity to own a work of mechanical art born from the mind of one of history’s most influential independent watchmakers.

For those looking to secure one of these limited creations, full details and entry instructions for the raffle are available at the official M.A.D.Editions website.
