'Sonos 27' Brings A Refreshed UI To The App And Lets AI Agents Control Your System

Sonos Announces Major Overhaul with ‘Sonos 27’ OS, AI Integration, and App Refresh

After a tumultuous period defined by a disastrous app launch in 2024 and a subsequent hiatus in new product releases, Sonos is looking toward a new era. The audio giant has officially unveiled Sonos 27, a foundational operating system update designed to modernize the user experience and, significantly, open the ecosystem to artificial intelligence.

Embracing the AI Revolution

The most headline-grabbing shift in Sonos 27 is the introduction of universal AI control. Moving beyond the limitations of pre-programmed voice assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant, Sonos is launching a public Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. This allows users to connect virtually any AI agent—including platforms like ChatGPT—directly to their Sonos system.

Once connected, these AI agents can manage the home audio environment, allowing users to issue natural language commands to play specific music, group speakers, or adjust volume. Beyond third-party integration, the company is also previewing “Sonos Custom Agents,” which will allow users to define unique AI personas, and an upgraded native Sonos voice assistant specifically optimized for music curation and mood-based playlist generation.

“Sonos Fabric”: Intelligent Spatial Awareness

The OS update also introduces “Sonos Fabric,” a sophisticated technology that enables speakers to sense their surroundings and adapt their roles automatically. By utilizing high-frequency sound to map a room, the system can intuitively reconfigure itself.

A standout application of this technology is the ability to use portable speakers, such as the Move 2, as instant surround-sound units. If placed behind a couch, the system will detect the new position and integrate the speakers into a home theater setup without any manual input. Additionally, Fabric will power an “early access” feature for the newly announced Ace Ultra headphones, allowing seamless audio handoff between speakers and headphones starting September 29.

A Refined User Experience

Recognizing the friction caused by its 2024 software update, Sonos is also shipping a major redesign of its mobile application. Starting September 8, users will benefit from a more intuitive interface featuring:

  • Persistent Navigation: Dedicated tabs for Home, System, and Search, alongside the ability to pin favorite speakers.
  • System Presets: One-tap shortcuts to trigger specific groups of speakers, content, and volume levels.
  • Platform-Specific Perks: iOS users will gain a “virtual volume knob” gesture and integration with the Apple Shortcuts app, allowing for complex automation via Siri. iPad users will also receive a dedicated interface optimized for larger displays.

The Road Ahead

Sonos 27 is set to arrive for all hardware currently operating on the company’s “S2” platform, covering virtually every product sold in the last decade.

While the industry remains cautious following last year’s software instability, the new UI improvements—which have been in testing throughout the summer—offer a promising signal that the company has prioritized stability and usability. As the company prepares for the September 8 rollout, the focus will be on ensuring these ambitious new AI and spatial features deliver on their promises of a frictionless, smarter home audio experience.
