Himachal Pradesh to Overhaul Government School Standards with New Attendance and Dress Codes
SHIMLA: In a major push to modernize the state’s educational infrastructure, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced a series of sweeping reforms for 150 government-run CBSE-affiliated schools. The initiative, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, aims to bolster administrative accountability and enhance the quality of learning for students in rural areas.
Following a high-level meeting of the Education Department in Shimla on Tuesday, CM Sukhu unveiled a comprehensive strategy to transform the academic environment across these select institutions.
A New Era of Accountability
To ensure punctuality and maintain consistent supervision, the government will implement a mandatory three-time attendance system. Under this new protocol, attendance will be recorded at three distinct intervals throughout the school day: upon morning arrival, during the lunch break, and at the time of student checkout.
This move is part of a broader effort by the state to monitor school operations more effectively and ensure that student engagement remains high throughout the day.
Teacher Dress Code and Financial Support
In addition to structural changes, the state government is introducing a formal dress code for faculty members, which will become mandatory effective October 1, 2026. Recognizing the potential financial impact on staff, the government has pledged a one-time special financial assistance grant of ₹5,000 to every teacher to assist with the procurement of the prescribed attire.
CM Sukhu added that the specifics regarding a standardized student uniform will be finalized within the coming week, ensuring a cohesive and professional aesthetic across all 150 schools.
Investing in Quality and Infrastructure
The state government is aggressively pursuing a roadmap to bridge the educational gap between urban and rural centers. Key highlights of the developmental push include:
- Human Capital Expansion: Approximately 1,200 teachers have already been recruited for these CBSE schools, with further hiring planned to fill remaining vacancies.
- Fiscal Commitment: The government has allocated an additional ₹80 crore dedicated to infrastructure upgrades, ensuring that classrooms and facilities meet modern CBSE standards.
- Rural Focus: CM Sukhu emphasized that the primary goal of this initiative is to deliver high-quality, CBSE-level education to children in remote rural pockets, effectively bringing world-class learning to their doorsteps.
Commitment to Excellence
During the meeting, the Chief Minister directed department officials to prioritize the effective implementation of these policies. He stressed that the government is not merely interested in superficial changes but is committed to a continuous improvement cycle regarding facility maintenance, staffing quality, and operational efficiency.
By prioritizing these upgrades, the Himachal Pradesh government hopes to create a model of excellence that can eventually be scaled across a wider network of schools, ensuring that the next generation of students in the state is well-prepared for competitive academic environments.
