PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi Defends Squad Shake-up Amidst Mounting Cricket Turmoil
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has issued a defiant response to critics following the radical restructuring of the national Test squad. As Pakistan faces a challenging period in international cricket, Naqvi insisted that the recent, sweeping changes were “essential” to stabilize the team’s trajectory.
Responding to the Backlash
The PCB’s decision to overhaul the team roster ahead of the third and final Test against England has ignited a firestorm of criticism from former players, analysts, and a disillusioned fanbase. Despite the pressure, Naqvi remains resolute, brushing off the negative reception while emphasizing that he is focused on long-term results rather than short-term public approval.
Addressing the accusations that his tenure has led to a decline in the sport, Naqvi challenged his detractors to look at the historical data. “I have never been afraid of criticism, and I never will be,” Naqvi stated, as reported by Geo News. “Those who say cricket has been destroyed since I came—look at what the rankings were before.”
While conceding that the team’s recent Test results have been disappointing, the PCB chief pointed to notable improvements in the side’s white-ball performance since he assumed leadership, suggesting that structural stability is beginning to take hold in other formats. He further noted that he is currently investigating deeper issues within the cricketing ecosystem, though he maintained that the current climate is not suitable for discussing matters outside of direct on-field performance.
A Radical Squad Overhaul
The drastic measures taken by the board follow a string of demoralizing losses in the series against England, where Pakistan conceded an unassailable 2-0 lead. The team suffered an innings defeat in the first Test, followed by a crushing 194-run loss in the second, prompting the board to release seven players, including stalwarts such as Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq.
In their place, the selection committee has pivoted toward youth and raw potential, calling up five uncapped players—Arafat Minhas, Mohammad Imran Jnr, Saad Baig, Mohammad Imran Randhawa, and Razaullah. These additions, coupled with the inclusion of Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, signify a heavy reliance on an inexperienced cohort to salvage the final match of the series.
Coaching Staff Realignment
Beyond the player roster, the PCB has also moved to unify its coaching philosophy. In a bid to streamline leadership, the board has brought in Mike Hesson as head coach and Ashley Noffke as bowling coach. Both figures are already established within the team’s white-ball set-up, reflecting Naqvi’s goal of creating a cohesive environment across all formats. Consequently, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Umar Gul have been relieved of their previous coaching duties.
