“Super El Niño” Threatens Global Stability as Climate Change Amplifies Extreme Weather

The disappearance of anchovies from the coasts of Peru and Chile has long been a traditional indicator of a shifting Pacific, but this year, their absence signals something far more ominous. Scientists are observing the early stages of what is projected to be one of the most powerful and destructive El Niños in living memory—a climatic event now being “supercharged” by the backdrop of human-induced global warming.

An Unprecedented Climatic Threat

El Niño occurs when the easterly trade winds in the Pacific weaken or reverse, allowing a massive surge of warm ocean water to shift toward the coast of South America. This disrupts the cold, nutrient-rich upwelling that supports vast shoals of anchovies, which the local fishing industry has dubbed El Niño de Navidad (The Christmas Child).

However, the current phenomenon is diverging from historical norms. While a typical El Niño usually triggers a temperature rise of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius in the equatorial Pacific, projections for the 2026-27 cycle suggest a potential spike of 3 degrees.

“We should be clear this is an unprecedented event,” said Adam Scaife, professor and head of long-range forecasting at the UK’s Met Office. “I have never seen an El Niño signal this intense in our forecasts. This will far exceed our recent experience of El Niño and its worldwide climate influences.”

Compounding Hazards: Hunger and Economic Shock

The consequences of this “super El Niño” extend far beyond marine life. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has characterized the event as “pouring fuel on the fire of a warming world.” As the weather pattern develops, it threatens to push global food systems, already strained by high energy and fertilizer costs, toward a breaking point.

The World Food Programme (WFP) warns that the combination of climate shocks and systemic economic instability could see the number of people facing acute hunger rise to 274 million by the end of 2027—an increase of nearly 50 million from current levels. Economists at Citigroup have issued a stark financial warning, estimating that the global economic toll could reach $7 trillion over five years as supply chains falter and extreme weather causes widespread agricultural failure.

Ecological and Human Impacts

The environmental fallout is already manifesting. From California to Ecuador, thousands of seabirds have washed up dead, and the collapse of baitfish populations is rippling up the food chain, threatening seals and sea lions.

Beyond biodiversity, human populations face a dual threat of extreme heat and water insecurity. John Nairn, the World Meteorological Organization’s senior extreme heat adviser, noted that heatwaves will compound other hazards, including water scarcity, wildfires, and the increased prevalence of waterborne diseases.

A New Era of Climate Extremes

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has launched its largest-ever mobilization of resources to deliver early-warning services. As the world watches these records break, climate scientists are already looking toward the horizon with concern.

“During large El Niño events, significantly more heat is released from the ocean to the atmosphere,” said Nick Dunstone, a climate scientist at the Met Office. “So 2027 is very likely to replace 2024 as the hottest year on record.”

Stephanie Roe, lead climate scientist at the WWF, emphasized that this is a critical turning point. “El Niño can bring devastating climate extremes on its own, but it’s unfolding today on a much warmer planet,” she stated, noting that the event is pushing both communities and ecosystems into uncharted territory.
