Borderlands 4 Welcomes New Vault Hunter: Meet Loveless, the Tech-Savvy Assassin

Borderlands 4 is finally bringing the stealth-based gameplay fans have been craving since the days of Borderlands 2. On September 10, developer Gearbox Software will introduce the game’s sixth playable Vault Hunter: Loveless the Hacker. Arriving as part of the upcoming FL4K and the Last Resort expansion, Loveless promises to redefine the series’ assassin archetype through a unique blend of high-tech cybernetic abilities and lethal precision.

A New Breed of Assassin

While characters like Amon or Harlowe bring their own flavor of combat to the roster, the team at Gearbox wanted Loveless to feel distinct—a character defined by refined, directional mastery. According to game designer Ryan Bailey, Loveless represents a departure from the “scrappy” tech users currently in the game. “Nothing is being done for the first time; this is all for the thousandth time,” Bailey explained, emphasizing that Loveless is a seasoned expert in her field.

Loveless’ background is as volatile as her powers. A former cybersecurity specialist for the weapons manufacturer Anshin, she was forced to integrate with a mind-controlling virus to prevent a global catastrophe after the pathogen escaped containment. This traumatic event left her infused with advanced technological abilities, effectively turning her into a living, breathing cyber-weapon.

Deadly Tools and Digital Chaos

Loveless’ kit is designed for players who favor high-damage, status-effect-heavy playstyles. Her action skills include:

  • Visual Paradox Nexus (VPN): A sophisticated take on traditional stealth cloaking that allows her to maneuver behind enemy lines undetected.
  • Plague Star: An oversized, lethal shuriken that inflicts “contagion.” This status effect spreads between enemies, creating a chain reaction of damage that intensifies as infected targets fall.
  • The Cyber-Worm: Perhaps her most striking companion, this metal-and-cable dragon can be summoned to the battlefield. It operates with a degree of autonomy, allowing players to issue commands—or deal with the chaotic fallout if the beast decides to act on its own instincts.

Character design director Nick Thurston also highlighted the addition of never-before-seen weaponry, including a “technocoggie” digital claw and a specialized kusarigama that adds a fresh layer to her melee combat.

Managing the RAM Crisis

In a nod to modern tech culture, Loveless introduces a unique gameplay mechanic centered on a “RAM gauge.” By landing critical hits and spreading contagion, players fill this resource meter to grant significant power boosts. When the gauge hits maximum capacity, her next melee attack becomes hyper-empowered. Naturally, Gearbox couldn’t resist injecting a bit of topical humor regarding the current real-world cost of computer memory.

“She’s got it all optimized! Nearly endless amounts!” Bailey joked regarding the character’s high-tech resource management.

As players prepare to dive into the new island included in the FL4K and the Last Resort expansion, they will have the perfect opportunity to test whether Loveless can truly fill the shoes of legendary assassins like Zer0.
