India’s Demographic Dividend is the Engine for Global Investment: L&T’s R Shankar Raman

Thanjavur: Highlighting India’s emergence as a premier global investment hub, R Shankar Raman, President and Wholetime Director (Finance) of Larsen & Toubro, emphasized that the nation’s growth trajectory is anchored in the immense potential of its young, skilled workforce. Delivering the keynote address at the 40th Convocation Day of SASTRA Deemed University on Saturday, Raman underscored the pivotal role graduates play in steering the country toward an era of unprecedented industrial expansion.

Strategic Sectors for Future Growth

Raman identified a series of critical domains that are set to define India’s economic landscape in the coming years. He urged the new generation of professionals to focus their expertise on Healthcare, Education, Public Transport, and Utilities. Furthermore, he highlighted that the Semiconductor industry, Water management, Defence, and the broad sectors of Energy and Environment are strategic pillars.

According to Raman, these areas are not just essential for national progress but also represent the most lucrative opportunities to harness India’s “demographic dividend.” By aligning their career paths with these sunrise sectors, graduates can position themselves at the forefront of the country’s mission to become a global economic powerhouse.

Bridging the Gap: Industry and Academia

Addressing the critical need for an adaptable workforce, the L&T veteran called for a closer synergy between academic institutions and industrial giants. He noted that while traditional academic grounding provides the necessary foundation, it must be complemented by a culture of constant upskilling to keep pace with rapid technological advancements.

“While your first degree secures your first job, it is your commitment to continuous learning that will determine your last job,” Raman stated, urging students to embrace the concept of lifelong education. He advised the graduating class to remain mentally agile, noting that adaptability is the primary currency in a volatile and competitive global job market.

A Milestone for SASTRA University

The convocation ceremony was a landmark event for SASTRA Deemed University, celebrating the academic achievements of 4,414 students. Degrees were conferred across a diverse spectrum of disciplines, including engineering, sciences, management, law, education, and social sciences, spanning undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels.

The event also featured the presentation of prestigious awards to celebrate academic excellence. The ‘Founder Chancellor’s Best Ph.D. Thesis Award’ was bestowed upon three distinguished scholars: Dr. Hari Suthan (Engineering), Dr. Anusree Sajeevan (Sciences), and Dr. Satya M (non-STEM disciplines).

Adding to the list of accolades, Biyyappu Hari Keerthi, a B.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) graduate, was honored with the Lord Selvamuthukumaran Award for Overall Academic Excellence. She was also the recipient of the Silver Jubilee Alumni Award, recognizing her as the Best Outgoing Girl Graduate Student of the year.

As these students step into the professional world, the message from the dais was clear: India’s future is being built by the current generation, and the opportunities for those willing to adapt, learn, and innovate are limitless.
