Green Breakthrough: Futamura Slashes NatureFlex Carbon Footprint by Nearly a Quarter

Futamura UK Ltd. has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable manufacturing, reporting a 24% average reduction in the carbon footprint of its NatureFlex cellulose films between 2019 and 2025. The results, verified through an independent third-party life cycle assessment (LCA) by ERM, highlight the impact of the company’s sustained investment in energy efficiency and process optimization.

The reduction equates to approximately 100,000 metric tons of avoided CO₂-equivalent emissions—a figure the company estimates is comparable to removing roughly 70,000 cars from UK roads for an entire year. These findings, based on IPCC AR6 GWP100 methodology, encompass the production of both plain and lacquered cellulose films, including the popular NatureFlex NVS range.

Lucy Cowton, sustainability manager at Futamura, attributed these gains to the company’s internal culture and operational focus. “The reductions in our operational and product carbon footprints reflect the dedication of our workforce and their commitment to continuous improvement,” said Cowton. “We see this as just the beginning, with future investments expected to reduce our operational emissions even further.”

The company’s path to lower emissions has been paved with a series of strategic technical upgrades. Recent improvements include the installation of a high-performance compressed air system equipped with integrated heat recovery technology. By capturing waste heat from compressors to preheat thermotanks, the facility has reduced its steam demand, cutting annual emissions by over 400 metric tons of CO₂-equivalent. Additional smaller-scale, high-impact initiatives, such as transitioning 80% of the manufacturing site to energy-efficient LED lighting and upgrading laboratory equipment and HVAC controls, have further contributed to the company’s improved energy profile.

Looking toward the future, Futamura has announced a major upcoming initiative: a Wet Sulphuric Acid (WSA) project, slated for implementation between 2027 and 2028. This advanced system will divert waste gases from the production line, oxidizing them into a reusable raw material. Crucially, the process will also recover heat to generate steam for manufacturing. Once operational, the WSA installation is expected to provide approximately 15% of the site’s total energy requirements, contributing to an additional annual emissions reduction equivalent to taking 4,000 cars off the road.

As the demand for sustainable flexible packaging grows, Futamura’s efforts serve as a blueprint for balancing high-volume manufacturing with environmental stewardship. By integrating circular economy principles—such as converting waste gases into raw materials—the company aims to support its global customer base in meeting increasingly stringent sustainability targets. With the WSA project and further efficiency measures on the horizon, Futamura signals that its focus on decarbonizing cellulose film production remains a top corporate priority.
