Grounding the Empire: Probe Agency Seizes Rs 510-Crore Assets in Ambani Group Crackdown

Grounding the Empire: Probe Agency Seizes Rs 510-Crore Assets in Ambani Group Crackdown

ED Targets Reliance Anil Ambani Group Assets in Major Money Laundering Crackdown

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), India’s premier anti-money laundering agency, has launched a significant crackdown on the Reliance Anil Ambani Group, moving to attach a wide range of assets linked to companies under the conglomerate’s umbrella. This aggressive action follows ongoing investigations into high-profile bank fraud cases involving Reliance Home Finance Limited (RHFL), Reliance Commercial Finance Limited (RCFL), and Reliance Communications Limited.

Extensive Asset Seizures

The agency’s latest intervention involves the attachment of both movable and immovable properties, a move aimed at curbing the alleged siphoning of public funds. According to the official statement released by the ED, the seized assets include two chartered aircraft, six parcels of land, and prime office premises located in Maharashtra. In connection with the RHFL and RCFL cases, the agency has also moved to secure two windmills situated in Tamil Nadu along with various bank deposits and investment portfolios.

The total value of assets under the lens of the PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) and FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act) regarding the Reliance Anil Ambani Group has now surged to an estimated ₹23,100 crore. As part of its probe, the ED has specifically attached assets worth ₹263.05 crore in the RHFL/RCFL fraud case and ₹247.12 crore in the Reliance Communications case.

Allegations of Financial Misconduct

The investigation was triggered by multiple complaints filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Delhi, as well as the Economic Offences Wings (EOW) of both the Delhi and Mumbai Police. The ED has launched probes into several key group entities, including Reliance Infrastructure, Reliance Power, and Reliance Capital, alleging a systematic effort to divert public funds.

The agency has leveled serious charges against the group, claiming that public money borrowed from banks and financial institutions was siphoned off through complex corporate structures. Investigators allege that the promoters misused the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) to shield corporate assets for personal use and diverted funds into offshore tax havens. “A large part was utilised for the individual benefit of the promoters and their family,” the ED stated.

Legal Fallout and Denials

So far, the crackdown has led to the arrest of 10 individuals, with the agency filing six formal complaints under the PMLA and one under FEMA.

This development comes on the heels of a separate legal challenge initiated by the CBI in August. The agency filed an FIR against Reliance Capital Limited and Anil Ambani personally, accusing them of causing a loss of approximately ₹1,816.22 crore to the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) due to alleged fraudulent investment practices.

In response to the mounting legal pressure, a spokesperson for Anil Ambani has consistently maintained his innocence. Regarding the CBI’s FIR, the spokesperson clarified that the case pertains to Reliance Capital Limited and noted that Ambani served only as a Non-Executive Director/Chairman until the Reserve Bank of India superseded the board in November 2021. The spokesperson asserted, “Anil Ambani denies any wrongdoing whatsoever, and reserves all rights available to him in law.”

As the investigations continue, the ED remains focused on tracking the flow of funds and recovering assets that were allegedly removed from the financial system through fraudulent means.
