Worksop residents urged to do this, to mark World Environment Day

Local people are encouraged to consider changing one action for the local environment, to mark World Environment Day this Friday, June 5.

World Environment Day, this year, considers how environmental development can bring economic benefits.

The UN says that we now see ‘solar panels stretch across rooftops, wind turbines lining the horizon, cities being redesigned for people, forests being replanted, and positive tipping points in every corner of the planet.”

Nearer home, Matt Cranwell, managing director of Worksop bus operator, Stagecoach East Midlands, said that taking the bus once a month, instead of the car, is one small step everyone can take to improve environmental impact.

He said: “It’s easy to get overwhelmed and not know what to do to help our local environment, but, individually, there are simple steps we can all take – and taking the bus is also a great value way to get around.

He continued: “Recent research, by trade association CPT, showed what a huge part buses can play in improving our environment.

“It found that if every person in Great Britain switched just one car trip to bus, per month, each year, by 2030 it would create a cumulative reduction of two million tons of carbon dioxide.

“A shift of two trips per month would result in a cumulative reduction of 19.5 million tonnes by 2050.”

Research commissioned by Stagecoach shows the impact of fuel price rises, caused by tensions in the Middle East.

It found that commuting by car costs, on average, a staggering £1,643.80 per year (£31.61 per week) for drivers in our region.

This financial strain is driven by fuel prices, maintenance costs and parking fees.
