The release of Thalapathy Vijay’s highly anticipated final film, Jana Nayagan, has reached a critical crossroads as it faces dual hurdles from the Censor Board (CBFC) and the Election Commission of India (ECI). With the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections scheduled for April 13, 2026, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has cast a shadow over the political thriller’s debut. Originally slated for a Pongal 2026 release, the H. Vinoth directorial is now mired in a unique legal and political dilemma. As Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik seeks official guidance from the ECI, fans and the film industry anxiously await whether the film will hit big screen before the star’s full-time transition into politics with TVK.
Archana Patnaik explains the ‘Jana Nayagan’ release approval
Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik gave a clear explanation about the issue during the latest media interaction. As per News 18, she said this is an unusual case where an actor is also seen as a political leader and a candidate. Because of this, the question has arisen whether permission from the Election Commission is required before releasing the film during the election period. She added that such a situation has never happened before, so a proper decision is needed.
‘Jana Nayagan’ release under consultation
Archana Patnaik also stated that the Election Commission will be consulted before giving a final answer. She explained that when the model code of conduct is active, any action related to a political candidate must be checked carefully. Since ‘Jana Nayagan’ involves a well-known actor who is also active in politics, the ECI will review the matter and provide clear guidelines soon. Until then, no final decision has been made regarding the release.
‘Jana Nayagan’ release delay
Earlier, the film’s release was postponed after issues with the censor board. The film was reviewed again by a revising committee due to complaints about certain scenes. Directed by H. Vinoth, the film features a strong cast and is expected to be Vijay’s last movie before his full-time political journey. With music by Anirudh Ravichander, the film has generated huge expectations. Now, only a verdict of the Election Commission will determine the actual release of ‘Jana Nayagan.’
