Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi finally debut for India against England?
India take on England in the first T20I at the Riverside Ground in Durham on Wednesday, and the question remains whether Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will finally get his shot at international cricket.

India’s batting struggled badly throughout the Ireland series under newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer, and that has fuelled growing pressure for changes heading into this five-match series.
However, according to assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, Sanju Samson continues to enjoy the team’s trust despite recent struggles, while Sooryavanshi remains in a developmental phase.

Speaking at the post-match press conference following India’s whitewash in Belfast, Ten Doeschate was asked how close Sooryavanshi was to making his senior debut, and his response left little ambiguity.
“It’s important to give players confidence and send the right message to the squad. We want to give players a long run in the team. So, as ready as Vaibhav is, and as excited as we all are to see him play, he’ll have to go through the same process as everyone else, bide his time, and wait for his opportunity,” he said.
When Sooryavanshi was initially included in the squad for this tour, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had remarked that the youngster had effectively earned his place through performance alone.

However, Ten Doeschate explained that there’s nothing unusual about a young player going through a settling-in period before getting actual game time, regardless of how prepared he might already look.
“He is absolutely ready to play international cricket. There’s no doubt about that,” he added.
As for Samson, Ten Doeschate made clear that a couple of poor outings wouldn’t be enough to push him out of the side. He pointed to Samson’s significant role in India’s World Cup triumph just months earlier, along with a solid IPL campaign, as reasons the team isn’t willing to discard him hastily.
“I think it’s not a question to say you can leave Sanju Samson out,” said Ten Doeschate. “A guy who went a long way to winning India the World Cup three months ago. He has had a fairly good IPL. It’s important in terms of giving players confidence and the message we send to players. We want to give guys a long run in the team.”

England name their XI for the Durham opener
England’s selectors have wasted no time in confirming their side, naming a strong and experienced XI to face India in the series opener. Harry Brook will captain a lineup that boasts more than 650 international caps between them at the Banks Homes Riverside on Wednesday.

The hosts will be eager to make a strong start to a busy white-ball summer, with five T20Is and three ODIs to come between July 1 and 19. England come into the contest as firm favorites against an India side still reeling from their shock defeat in Ireland.
Sooryavanshi might have to wait a little more for his India debut
India are showing patience, which makes sense from a development standpoint, but with the team already trailing in confidence after the Ireland disaster, there’s a real argument that this series is precisely when bold calls should be made.
However, if we go by Ten Doeschate’s comments, a debut on Wednesday seems unlikely. If India goes on to seal the series, then the teenager might be awarded a starting berth in the final one or two matches.
