Indian refineries took in more discounted Russian crude in June, pushing Moscow’s share above fifty percent. The increase may alter regional trade flows and test energy security strategies.
In June, India increased its oil imports from Russia to a record level, according to vessel-tracking data from LSEG and Kpler.
Total India’s oil imports remained close to the previous level, totaling about 4.9 million barrels per day; Russia remained the largest supplier according to Kpler data.
In June, the share of Russian oil in India’s total imports exceeded half of the volume, while in May this figure stood at 36.5%.
Context and Dynamics of Supply
This month, Indian oil refineries received from Russia about 2.7 million barrels per day. By comparison, in May imports of Russian oil to India stood at 2.13 million barrels per day, while LSEG estimated it at 1.95 million barrels per day.
Russia remains the dominant supplier in India’s import structure since 2022–2023. Changes in the policy of several European buyers after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine have led Indian refineries to source cheaper crude.
Despite changes in the global energy markets, India continues to buy Russian oil, reflecting a pragmatic approach to securing crude amid rising risks on sea routes. This dynamic underscores the role of Russian supply for India’s energy security and its position in the global oil market.
