‘Really Absurd’: Streaming giants are deleting fan-favourite 'Premalu' to force-feed its Hindi remake

"Where Did Premalu Go?" Fans Question Removal of Malayalam Hit Ahead of Hindi Remake Release

Mumbai, India – A brewing controversy has erupted in the Indian film industry, with fans questioning the sudden disappearance of the Malayalam blockbuster Premalu from the streaming platform JioHotstar. The removal coincides with the highly anticipated trailer release for its Hindi remake, Prem Keetanu, starring Veer Pahariya. The timing has fueled speculation and discontent among viewers, who fear the original is being deliberately sidelined to promote the new adaptation.

The 2024 romantic comedy Premalu, a critical and commercial success, was previously available on JioHotstar in Malayalam, Tamil, and Hindi. However, with the launch of the Prem Keetanu trailer on Monday, the original film vanished from the platform. While its Telugu dubbed version remains accessible on Aha, the absence of the other language versions from a major Indian streaming service has not gone unnoticed.

A Curious Coincidence or Deliberate Strategy?

The timing of Premalu‘s removal has become a significant talking point, particularly as Prem Keetanu gears up for its October theatrical release and embarks on its promotional campaign. There has been no official confirmation linking the original’s removal to the Hindi remake. Industry insiders often point to licensing and distribution agreements as common reasons for shifts in streaming availability.

However, for a devoted fanbase, the lack of explanation has only strengthened their suspicions. "Removing Premalu from the official streaming service is really absurd," lamented one fan online, while another questioned the necessity of taking down the original for the sake of the remake. Many viewers feel that the decision is less about routine platform changes and more about creating an "unnecessary obstacle" to accessing their preferred version.

Remake Trailer Fuels the Fire

The reception to the Prem Keetanu trailer has further intensified the debate. Directed by Apoorv Singh Karki, the remake reportedly follows the general premise of Premalu but introduces significant plot alterations, including a change in how the protagonists meet. This has led to a largely unenthusiastic response from many who loved the original.

"Several viewers questioned whether the trailer even felt like the same film, despite Prem Keetanu being an official remake," highlighting the disconnect many feel. This lukewarm reception, coupled with the original’s inaccessibility, has created an uncomfortable dynamic where fans are confronted with a remake that, for many, fails to capture the essence of the beloved Premalu.

The Enduring Appeal of Premalu

Girish AD’s Premalu resonated deeply with audiences, becoming a breakout hit due to its charming humor, the undeniable chemistry between its lead actors Naslen and Mamitha Baiju, and its authentic portrayal of young Malayalis navigating life, friendship, and romance away from home in Hyderabad. The film’s ensemble cast, including Sangeeth Prathap, Akhila Bhargavan, Shyam Mohan, and Althaf Salim, also contributed to its widespread appeal. The film’s success was such that a sequel was announced, though it has since been delayed.

This established history and passionate fan base are crucial to understanding the current outcry. Premalu is not merely an older film being superseded; it remains a cherished favorite that its audience wishes to revisit.

While the OTT removal could indeed be a standard licensing decision coincidentally aligned with the remake’s promotional push, the absence of transparency has left fans to draw their own conclusions. As Prem Keetanu strives to win over an audience already deeply attached to Premalu, making the original harder to find might, ironically, generate more resentment than excitement for the new adaptation. The industry now watches to see if this strategic move will pave the way for the remake or inadvertently alienate the very audience it hopes to attract.
