Reports from members of the public suggest that the four vehicle collision occurred on London Road a short time ago between the pedestrian crossing and the site of a new Burger King restaurant at St Nicholas’ Gate Retail Park.
London Road is a busy route between the city centre and areas on the outskirts of Carlisle such as Scotby and Harraby.
It also links to the M6 Motorway and A6 for commuters heading from Penrith.
Traffic maps are not currently displaying the incident but AA Roadwatch is showing that cars are moving very slowly or stationary on London Road.
