The new Environment Minister has committed to delivering the government’s Carbon Neutral Roadmap – which sets out how the Island will emit no more carbon than it can absorb by 2050 – as new figures were released showing that greenhouse gas emissions fell by 1% between 2023 and 2024.
The latest annual audit of Jersey’s gas emissions found that Jersey emitted 342,589 tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2024, 1% down on the previous year.
Other than an increase in 2021 following the pandemic, the data show that the Island’s total emissions have consistently fallen every year since 2016, and by 49% between 1990 and 2024.
The main reason for this major drop is the JEC’s decision to start importing clean electricity from France and stop generating electricity locally using fossil-fuel-burning generators.
The latest dataset, which estimates emissions from a wide range of activities, found Jersey emitted 342,589 tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2024.
Road transport and heating buildings continue to be the biggest causes of Jersey’s emissions, with road vehicles accounting for almost 27% of Jersey’s total emissions, and fossil fuel car journeys specifically accounting for 25%.
Between 2023 and 2024, road transport emissions fell by almost 3%. Heating and cooling homes and businesses account for just over 28% of Jersey’s total emissions.
Shipping and aviation represent over 21% of Jersey’s 2024 emissions, with emissions from domestic flights increasing by more than 4%.
The figures in the inventory are produced for the government by independent organisation Aether.
The inventory provides estimates for historical emissions of greenhouse gases from 1990 until the most recent submission year, minus two. Therefore, the inventory published in 2026 covers the period 1990 to 2024.
Environment Minister Mary Le Hegarat said: “I’m pleased to publish the latest greenhouse gas inventory for Jersey, which shows our emissions have continued to fall as we deliver on our climate commitments.
“Over this term of government, I will be working to further reduce Islanders’ dependence on fossil fuels through delivery of the Carbon Neutral Roadmap.”
