Ram Gopal Varma recently drew parallels between Bollywood and South cinema, reflecting on Hindi films’ “accountability.”
The 64-year-old filmmaker, who rose to prominence with the 1990 action film Shiva, claimed that Bollywood attempted to dominate the national market after the COVID-19 pandemic by prioritising discipline and accountability.
In an exclusive conversation with Great Andhra, the Rangeela director compared the working cultures of Bollywood and the Telugu film industry.
Speaking to the outlet, he said, “Bollywood, especially when it comes to accountability and discipline, has started following many processes only in the last two or three years, post-COVID. Before that, it was mostly all flops for years, and South Indian cinema basically took over Indian films. That’s even been covered in national media. They need to see the balance sheet. How much you made and why. It’s all about accountability.”
The Satya filmmaker also pointed out that a similar system would never work in Telugu cinema, as producers do not have the authority to enforce such limits.
