“Cricket offered no viable career path. We perceived participation in sports as a frivolous pursuit, which is why I strongly encouraged Auqib to prioritize his academic endeavors,” stated Ghulam.
However, Auqib’s unwavering dedication ultimately swayed his father’s perspective.
“Witnessing his profound passion for cricket, I conceded. I recognized that, both as a parent and an educator, it was inappropriate to compel him into an activity he did not desire. I subsequently began to offer my full support.”
Junaid Dar, a childhood friend of Auqib, recalled their formative years in an environment where the prospect of professional cricket seemed exceedingly remote.
“Auqib exhibited an almost obsessive fascination with cricket from a young age. I frequently questioned him, ‘Why are you investing so much in this? There is no professional future here.’ We originated from a region devoid of any established concept of professional sports, and infrastructure was notably scarce.”
In pursuit of his aspiration, Auqib routinely undertook journeys of approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) to Srinagar to train on appropriate cricket pitches. Remarkably, he did not even possess a pair of spiked footwear when attending his initial cricket trials.
Nevertheless, his rigorous work ethic remained unyielding, as attested by his cousin, Bilal.
