Sarfaraz Khan Breaks Silence on Test Recall, Set to Join India Squad for Sri Lanka Series
Mumbai, India – After a prolonged period of stellar domestic performances and an agonizing wait, Mumbai’s prolific batter Sarfaraz Khan has finally received the much-anticipated call-up to India’s Test squad. The news comes as a replacement for the injured Sai Sudharsan for the upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka.
The 28-year-old right-handed batter took to social media to share his initial reactions, posting a couple of poignant pictures donning the Team India travelling jersey. In a particularly heartwarming snap, his father was seen sitting beside him, a testament to the journey and support that has underpinned Sarfaraz’s cricketing ambitions. This public display marks a significant moment, signifying the end of a long and often frustrating wait for a player who has consistently dominated the domestic circuit.
Sarfaraz’s inclusion stems from the unfortunate toe injury sustained by Sai Sudharsan during the India A tour last month. Sudharsan is currently undergoing recovery at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru. The BCCI has assured that Sudharsan is making significant progress, with its medical team closely monitoring his rehabilitation.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced the change in a release: "The men’s Selection Committee has named Sarfaraz Khan as a replacement for Sai Sudharsan for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. He will link up with the Indian squad in Colombo before the team travels to Galle for the first Test match, starting August 15, 2026."
A Long Road to Redemption
This call-up is particularly significant for Sarfaraz, who has been a consistent run-machine in first-class cricket, often leading to widespread calls for his inclusion in the national squad. Despite his impressive domestic form, opportunities at the highest level have been scarce.
Sarfaraz has previously represented India in six Tests, accumulating 372 runs. His last Test appearance was against New Zealand in Mumbai in 2024. He was also part of India’s squad for the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, though he did not feature in any of the five Tests. Furthermore, he was part of the India A squad during the England tour but was overlooked for the main Indian Test squad for the five-match series in June-July 2025.
Despite these setbacks and near misses, Sarfaraz’s resolve remained unshaken. He continued to deliver strong performances in domestic cricket, consistently keeping himself in contention for a return to the national team. His sheer volume of runs and ability to dominate bowling attacks at the domestic level made his omission increasingly difficult to justify, making this recall a widely welcomed decision among cricketing enthusiasts and pundits.
Crucial Series for India’s WTC Aspirations
The two-Test series against Sri Lanka holds significant importance for India’s aspirations in the World Test Championship (WTC). Currently positioned fifth on the WTC points table, India will be looking to secure maximum points against sixth-placed Sri Lanka to bolster their chances of reaching the WTC final.
The first Test is scheduled to commence in Galle on August 15, with the second Test to follow in Colombo, providing Sarfaraz Khan an immediate opportunity to make an impact on the international stage.
