MUMBAI, August 10 (Reuters) – The National Stock Exchange of India announced on Monday that exchange operator BSE will replace information technology company Wipro in its benchmark Nifty 50 index, effective September 30.
BSE’s inclusion in the Nifty 50 follows a semi-annual index review by the NSE, which determined that BSE’s six-month average free-float market capitalization was at least 1.5 times that of Wipro, the index’s smallest constituent.
This adjustment occurs as investors assess the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence for Indian IT service exporters, and as Indian households increasingly channel their savings into financial markets.
Changes to the Nifty 50 are closely observed by the financial community. As of May 31, passive funds with approximately $97 billion in assets under management track the 50-stock index, according to data from the NSE. The index comprises the 50 largest companies in India, based on their average free-float market capitalization over the past six months, with additional criteria for trading liquidity applied before inclusion.
On Monday, BSE’s shares closed 4% higher, bringing its gains for 2026 to around 37%. In contrast, Bengaluru-based Wipro saw a 1.1% decline on Monday, and its shares are down 29.5% for the year.
